Check out the news for the latest information on a few plans Microsoft has for the major release of Windows Vista. There are even some deals included :)

some very nice ideas in there, athough allowing downloads of their OS will probably lead to some piracy along the way

Indeed pirating will be an issue, but with all Windows when has it not? I like the upgrade idea, if your only paying for the difference. Thats nice.

I also like the idea of upgrading. Gives you a chance to check it out and then if you feel you need the better features you won't need to buy a whole new version.

Will it allow you to redownload after say a format?

I would imagine either a new code would be given or you would have a secure account. The second would be a good idea imo, like steam

nice to see there thinking of their customers money still.

:p ;) :D

Will be interesting to know if they implemented the virtualisation layer into the full version ;)

The last I heard, virtualisation was to be made available on all Vista versions from Business and above. Apparently, none of the home versions will have the feature.

Why`s that m8y ?

The powers that be at Redmond have decided that the technology is not yet mature enough for home users. In its EULA it will be illegal for punters to install home versions of Vista in a Virtual Machine. If you wanted to be cynical, you could probably suggest that the reason is probably so that Apple and Linux customers will have to pay out more to install Vista on their machines. :D

Hehe ya.

Nah, if wanted to be really cynical -- as opposed to releasing 1 flat version of an OS with both 32 and 64 integrated on 1 DVD, and it installs inteligently dependant on what u`r needs are..

After I`ve made my new OS, I`d strip bits out of each one, in kind of a step-down effect, so as I were to end up with 3/4, sorry 6/8 or so different versions that I can spread a spectrum of prices along.

This way, I can keep the viewing aim of the public, their aspirations for want of a better word, on the top end one and prehaps offer them upgrades, at a cost to bring them up a level.

I can price the top one at an alarming price, executives can get away with paying that, for want of not being left out in the technology of today (rollseyes); I can get the enthusiatic bunch to buy the next one down prehaps - these guys spend quite a bit on hardware, so I`m sure I can drain them pretty well; and then there`s the good ole family dood that feels he`ll have to buy it, but his price range, although high, I can strip down just enough to allow him to have to save to upgrade. Afterall, he`ll appear a real donut when he discusses his version in work. hehe I may just get 3 or 4 purchases out of him cos of the pcs in his house, hmmm. hehe x2 when he finds 2 out of the 3 pcs need upgrading mwhuuhhhaaa, johnny will be pleased.

It`s no longer Win98, the ploy was home, pro etc. The newest is what we have now. Windo$e 2010 will have 4 versions I`m sure.

Chu-Ching.

But the step-down and up makes sense to me. Obviously a company will want to get people to pay as much as they can get, but at least they do offer more basic versions for those who aren't willing to spend the money

Apple release a new OS practically every year and people have to buy that...at least that doesn't happen.

Ah well I'm sure you're all gonna jump down their throats now for wanting money after investing billions of dollars in development in a new OS. Yes MS want money but they're a company and if I was Bill, I'd be damned if I didn't do the same thing

I don't mean the usage on virtual machine. It's something totally different.

Altho I'm not that surprised none of you have heard of it as it is meant to be secret.

I think I will leave it a while to see if anyone gets what I am on about, altho I'm guessing people will be googling it already  :D
