Microsoft stops OEM sales of Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8.1

Wow. What a d word move !

Saying that though I am currently using Windows 7 on my water cooled rig and it's been a complete nightmare. It still refuses to auto update so every time I have an issue with a component I have to run netstop wuauserv and install them all manually, one by one.

So it's clear that they are hating on 7 right now. Shame really.

Now going to have to check if that also includes downgrade rights as well, as that could potentially be an enormous issue for me at work.

Microsoft is very unclear here sadly, though future machines with Intel Kaby Lake/ AMD Zen will not support these older OSes as Microsoft will not update them.

Kinda will limit businesses that use these OSes before long.

Do they even realise that there are business needs around the world that can't support windows 10, right? Because of old peripherals (eg Wireless Projectors, printers) or old software...

Businesses don't apply for this. They have contracts with MS not OEMs. The new CPUs won't really be a big deal, software companies will update there stuff

Universities have to get supplies from OEMs though.. at least that's the case in Greece, we want to order some new dekstops for the classrooms and windows7 is the only OS that is supported for some applications we use.... So what we might end up doing is getting the desktops without an os/license and then mass buy a license...

Microsoft being Microsoft and removing choice when purchasing a computer. I guess it's the only way they can eventually force everyone onto their OS. I'll be sticking with 7 until the security updates stop then probably onto Linux as my main OS and Windows for purely unsupported games. I've had enough of MS's crap.

no surprise really as MS move to push everyone onto Win 10.
So glad I moved over to Linux and have not needed my Win 10 partition since August :)

Step one: Forced OEM's not to sell Windows 7/8.1
Step two: Force retailers to stop selling Windows 7/8.1

With the step two i'm sure this is going to happen in the next 3-6 months, I'm kinda shock no one hasn't worked this one out :p

I wouldn't be shock either if microsoft says we are going to end support a lot earlier than when ever support for windows 8.1 runs out, We all know that microsoft wants to do this.

I'm liking MS less and less as time goes on.

Sadly with Windows 8.1 the ability to customize the OS' appearance became a lot harder than with 7, With 10 it's just impossible minus some icon packs and MS seems to be catering to the lowest common denominator when it comes to tinkering so it becomes more and more idiot proof.

It's slowly going the way of OSX so it becomes simpler and simpler to use for the masses which is a shame as this takes on customization out of it.

Yep, This what has happen to Windows it's just getting dumb down for the dumbest people.

Ahhh i miss the glory days of Windows where to could customise everything but that was back when Bill was running the ship not this idiot they have now.

I remember back when you used to install Windows 98 & 2000 where you could pick what you wanted to install before Windows is even installed, ohhh no we can't have that these days, Microsoft has to design an OS for idiots maybe they shouldn't even own a computer in the first place yeah i went there.

Right there with you ^_^

I can't remember which show but John C. Dvorak (not sure how many people on here have heard of this guy but he's pretty famous) "He said that people should have to pass a test before they would be allow to use a computer"

I'm not sure if i'm correct word from word going off memory here.

Yes the same John C. Dvorak the famous apple hater

We're on W7 Enterprise with no plans on upgrading any time soon. (we only left XP in the last couple of years) Any new hardware we get has our software suite put on it from an image. Licences for days lol. The only issue down the road will potentially be driver support for new peripherals. Legacy hardware is usually alright as far as I'm aware.

Corporate software (like the rest of government) evolves slowly.

move to Linux :)

Depending on what you do on your pc, this it's either brilliant or foolish.

Gaming is probably the biggest loser here, as most pc games (aaa titles anyway) require either a vm with Windows on it (so no benefit) or wine/variant (which don't support everything).

I'm not saying Linux doesn't have games, it's just a harsh reality that most dev studios don't develop their games with Linux in mind.

In fact, I'm not 100% sure that the gpu driver people do either.
