Microsoft may be bringing Xbox One Games Compatibility to Windows

It will make their life a lot easier I know that much.

This was hinted at when Windows 8 first launched BTW. It had code in it that was related to Xbox.

I was considering getting an Xbox One X at some point in the future after selling my Xbox One to friend over Christmas (their kid wanted one, so I let it go cheap).

Maybe I'll just wait a bit longer and see how this pans out. I've got plenty of games to keep me busy on PC and PS4 anyway. Not to mention the TV series I need to catch up on. And the pile of books...

Hmm, making the Xbox ecosystem more flexible would let them introduce newer models of Xbox more frequently as well, and with some luck those might also be hackable.

This sounds a lot like my life, only the list gets longer over time. I have far too many games in the "need to finish this" pile.

From what I have seen the next Xbox entry level console (they're doing two from what I hear) is 1080p. So it sounds like the entry level console may be less powerful than the 1X.

I was pleased to find that out.

If I could one day finally play Forza Horizon 2 (Best world imo & basically identical engine/gameplay to 3) on my PC then I'm happy, I can't actually play it anymore since I don't live with anyone with an Xbone now. Though I have a feeling these benefits might require specific support & licensing issues being what they are with racing games that dampens my hopes abit.

To be honest I think x86 security is so robust now and with these systems using so much custom silicon I think security is probably going to stay as strong as with the current systems, which have been fairly resilient to attacks/hacks compared to past models.

Also yeah the rumours we've seen so far said a ~4Tflop Navi GPU for the 1080p model which would probably be like ~20-22CU's depending on Navi's gains over Vega and the rumoured 4K model was 12Tflops so presumably a ~60 CU model which would traditionally seem unrealistic but assuming this is an MCM composition like Zen2 that's more than possible I guess.

Makes you wonder how it will effect actual Xbox sales if they go this route, though would that be countered by games sales increasing but they need better exclusives PS wins on the better exclusives atm

Depends on the cost of equivalent hardware.

I saw a few people on YT trying to build a $500 PC to match the 1x and they all failed. None of them could run above about 10 FPS at 4k, even with the graphics as low as they could be.

That made the 1x somewhat of a bargain for 4k, which is why I got one.

Prices have dropped a bit since then, but for low 4k settings you need something like a 1060/1070 so that's over half of your budget gone there.

Yeah what a lot of people don't seem to realise around the internet is this unity between the software makes PC gaming less appealing compared to the cheaper & better value consoles, not vice versa, for all of the major price brackets. This is far from a shot in the foot for Microsofts Xbox hardware, it's a way for them to say definitively "No one can beat this right now", even if the new cheap Xbox launches at £350 & the expensive one at £650 it'd be a push to build a PC of comparable speed in those price ranges.

How many people game @4K though, one of the things I don't like with consoles is the online if you want it you have to pay not only for the game but also XB live or ps plus on a pc it's only the game and chances are you'd get the game cheaper on pc than on console

To be fair I think the free games you get with the online pass' nowadays often make up for the cost to most people, you can usually get a years pass for about £30 now I think so you'd expect there to be at least a few decent games given there's a few reasonable ones a month(I occasionally buy a months worth of gold just to get the free games on my MS account), my friend got a OneX on launch as it was the only system under £800+ that could properly push a 4K TV really, his GTX1060 based PC never really kept up to it, I'm pretty sure we're passed the point of most TVs sold being 4K, you've been able to get ~40" ones for £300-£400 for years now. The sales you get on Xbox Live are just as good as Steam sales imo and I often see games at the same prices or cheaper than PC on their store now, maybe even better nowadays as Steam sales arn't really much anymore, that's besides the fact you can get like 6 month old games for ~£10 2nd hand on eBay.

Well it would be kinda daft to buy a 1x if you are not running 4k to be honest.

The secret of 4k though is that once you hit that res you don't need any AA at all to stop the jagglies. Which was the first thing I noticed in FO4. There are none, and from 12ft away it looks every bit as good as the PC game. Of course if you freeze frame it, take a shot and compare to PC? yeah, miles behind (looking up close) but from a distance it looks incredible.

That was the allure of 4k for me though (on PC). The fact that you didn't need any AA at all and jagglies were all but eliminated. That's kinda addictive haha.

Older games for Xbone are sometimes cheaper than PC. I would not buy a game at launch though as they are too expensive. I got Prey for about £10 IIRC and I am really enjoying it at 4k so far. Sadly my Xbox is now packed, so play will resume when I get to my new place at the end of March.

You only need Xblive if you want to play games with other people online. It is not a requirement to use the console. I paid for a 6 month sub, but in that time I've probably played 20 hours of State Of Decay 2 with a pal and that's it, so I won't be buying any more. For that I have the PC. Last 3 games since SOD2 have all been played on a PC :)

One thing I will say about the 1x though is only buy it if 1. You have a 4k TV (obs) 2. The game you play the most is on it, and runs at 4k. 3. It's not an online game.

I mostly veg on mine playing FO4. Which was why I bought it, and it has not disappointed.

Yeah I absolutely have the agree with the jaggies part, having both super crisp images with lots of sharp upclose detail and no jaggies at the same time is amazing, it feels so much more natural than traditional AA techniques, the no compromises crystal image without the need for special tricks to make things look ok made even not particularly amazing looking games(Rocket League or similar) seem kinda next gen in clarity & detail compared to the OneS or a PC at 1080p (Though we'd often play that split screen sat about 2 feet from a 40" panel).

TBH the Xbox 2 or whatever it is called does not have to do anything but be able to run games at 4k 60. The reason is mostly scientific, but apparently from 13 ft or so (may not be precise) you can not tell the difference between 1080p and 4k *apart from* the lack of jagglies.

I ran mine at 1080p, and the edges of things like, "glisten?" I think that's the terminology I am looking for. And you can see it, even from 14ft away (the depth of my current bedroom). Once you get to 4k? nothing. It really does look absolutely superb (even if it's not compared to the PC up close). Fact is you buy a TV suited to a distance (unless you're daft*) so yeah 4k 13ft should be good enough for all.

*I bought a 4k 65" TV about three years ago. The thing is? my room is 17ft deep, and it sits above a very large fire place so looks kinda small in all honesty. We offered up our 42" and it looked absolutely stupid. Anyhoo, my new room is about 10ft deep which IMO is kinda too close but hey, I am not wasting cash on another TV. So it's kinda imperative that I run games at 4k or they are going to look like ass. So the Xbone is being removed from the bedroom equation and put in the living room, where I can also use it for 4k Netflix (which I do).

So it's basically Xbox Play Anywhere opened up to non-exclusives, right?

Sounds neat, but sadly, devs will see this as an option to skip a dedicated PC version of a game...

I hope this means we'll get to play some of those 360 games that you can play on the Xbone thanks to its backwards compatibility. To play Mercenaries 1 again would be epic.
