Microsoft Jumps to No. 1 in National Corporate Reputation Survey (US)

Forgot about that lol, still though, whatever is left after 10 billion isn't exactly going to be hard to live off. Saying that though, I doubt I could ever part with 10bil in one lump....if I had it that it

Llwyd are you such mr. negative

I believe Gates is a good guy! :)

He worked for his money far and square and now he is helping others with it!

That is AWESOME!

I know it might seem like a strange response but it should be expected. Yes he's worked hard and is a deserving guy but that much money is just stupid, it's his duty to use it to help others. That being said, there are people richer than him that don't go giving to charity. There should be an UN / EU enforced tax that applys to the top 200 richest people or something, all of which is put into charities

Not sure how he worked for it fairly as from what I've read he just copied loads of stuff including the basics of windows :(

But I agree with llwyd

Tbh, there comes a point where you have so much money that there is no reason not to give to charity.

I totally disagree with that, why if you have worked for your cash should you have to give it away unessarily.

Because about 99% of them haven't worked for their money (or at least a huge portion of it), will never manage to spend the slightest fraction of it and just live off the intrest

Yea and most rich people here are looked upon LESS by the GOV to take their money. They only wanna rob Peter to pay Paul. (Peter being us poor people, Paul being other rich people, war payment ect.) Bill only gives to charities cause he has to. He dosent want to spend even MORE money on the GOV (yea, cause they really need that money HA!) so instead he puts it out to charity.

Like Rast was saying, he has teams that come to him and say, hey lets do this instead of that, we keep more money that way. Bill says ok, and its done. (Very hypotheticaly speaking).

what a load of bollacks, why would he be stepping down from microsoft to head his own charity?? if he donates because he "has" to.

Exactly - he feels that he has earnt enough money and that he would like to put something back into the world that he has helped shape (I don't think that's too much of an over-statement).

Makes him look good.

That's a load of rubbish - this is his retirement and I think it highly likely he doesn't give a damn what we think about it

I think "cynical" is an underestimate for that comment and others in this thread. Fairly narrow minded thinking on your part for sure.

MS as a corporation is highly successful and has employed underhand tactics at many points in it's history, but quitting MS and putting basically ALL of your money into charity...as well as convincing others of the super-rich to do the same? That's not about greed

Yea ok, think what you want. As a celeb he still has to maintain a level of respect in this world. And with everybody going about bashing him and his company, this is what he does to say hey, im not a

Seen Bill on TV? All he talks about is stuff he loves and what stuff MS are doing that is cool. He's a very rich Geek, not a celeb, imo

I know if I were him I'd leave MS and get away from people slagging me off 'cause they don't like the OS (yet still use it) and hate the company (yet still support it by using the OS, even if it is illegal).

I like to not think the worst of people, in most situations

I wasnt thinking the worst of him, i was just stating the obvious. Anybody who gets world or national attention (due to movie, stunt, music, in this case richest guy in the world) is a celeb. And im sure (since hes a very smart guy) he knows that even if he DOES leave Microsoft he will still be bashed becasue of Windows.

U guyz are being very niave. We`ll be praising the royal family for their charitable work next. They`re nice people on tv.

If I were him, I`d write an OS. - and that isn`t a dig or a sly remark, I`m totally serious.

I`d be the first to say, I`m probably the richest guy outside of the middle east, maybe even including, lets draw a line under this mess and write a real OS with real advances in mind. Draw in the best talents from Linux, Mac, independants, 3rd parties - not by way of any force that we`ve used in the past - but as a lifeline to say "look guys, we can`t go on like this. We`ve got the means, u`ve got a hell of alot of good technique and together we can surely build and OS to take mankind forward - and do it the right way." Bring along the micro industries, with no intent of competition in mind for this purpose - sure they can compete on a market basis, but technology wize we`re going to advance. The 80/90s are pretty much a generation away, computers are meant to grow faster than the dollar.

And to be fair they`d tell me to get stuffed on the basis that I`ve made my monies at their and past piers expense. In a nice corporate way of course.

Yeah retire, leave m$, build try and build a company based on computers and not on the pursuit of the dollar - coz I`ve already got that.

Or retire from working around the clock, run a charity in my spare time and enjoy my life with my kids, which is what he'll be doing I expect.

Sod starting another company

He wouldn`t have been doing that and won`t be doing that Kemp, come off it. To `run` a charity would be almost exactly the same as starting a company, if u`r gonna do it with the best of intensions.

U`d probably need the drive to build an OS in order to start one I`d imagine, atm I`d do it now, given the same situation.

EDIT: On second thoughts I can see the Gates Foundation busting into a charity market. Turning up where all other charities used to go, copying their techniques, hiring lawyers to put them out of business if their money takings even slightly infracted on GF takings. If any companies that consider themselves charitable donate to any other foundations other than GF, all of a sudden their market forces will work against them and be bewilderly cut off from any m$ assistance techwize. hehe 10 years from now there are only 5 or so charities left in the world and GF draws about 70% of the share - it`ll even be floated.

Yea, but with his people under him he dosent exactly have to "run" it. Thats what Kemp is saying. Sorta like now, he plays golf more than he sits in his office im willing to bet. If he needs to sign something they run it out to him whereever he is.
