Nope, im not talking RAM. My pc is seeming to have trouble retaining changes after its rebooted, for example, if i arrange my icons, reboot, theyre back to their original places. Could this be down to me using the 'Quick Format' option over the standard one last time i re-installed windows?

very weird simpton, but i dont think the "quick format" option during windows installation has anything to do with it.

i've found a way around it, but i dont think its called a solution. have a look at http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

I use it as when i remote desktop in to my home computer (res is 1280x1024) from my work pc (res 1024x768) is has to resize the desktop to fit it all on the screen therefor moving all the icons. it works a treat :)

Hope this helps

Yeah thats real strange. Does your user account have full rights to the C: (username not in guests group & correct ntfs permissions to C:\documents and settings\yourusername\desktop).

Its certainly not the quick format as thats all i ever use to reinstall my pc, and i've done it a LOT of times ;)

Have you recently used any those so called tweak programs to tweak this windows as seems like your windows profile is not getting written probably and its resetted all the time. Also check if your IE history , Start > Run History, recent documents do exist.

Way to check above is goto start > run > run something e.g cmd for command prompt etc ... restart the pc and see if its there

If they are not then we can take it from there.

nah i have full admin rights, and yea stuff stays in my history. however the copy of windows i overwrote was a modified / stripped down version

..........but i re-installed windows, thats why i thought the quick format might have left out something that would fix it. plus the icons are just an example. the problem occurs with AVG updates and sound settings to

So you are using a n-lited version of windows? Or have you reinstalled with a non-nlited version?

non n-lited

I know these are silly questions, but sometimes techies overlook the silly things...

* Are you sure you used the non n-lited cd to reinstall.

* Are you sure you did a format and didnt accidentally do a repair instead?

And, is this behaviour present when windows is freshly installed, or is it only after you have installed your apps?

1. yup, it's the proper job with the holograms and shiney bits

2. yup, deleted the partition, recreated it and installed windows.

as far as i remember it was from the start, with the damn recycle bin jumping back to the center of the screen. its not a major problem, just a tad irritating.

try creating an account, then log into that account and see if the same happens. If it doesnt then your profile is corrupted. if it does....back to the drawing boards.
