Mega Matrix Competition

I will make sure to give you guys some pictures of this beast! oh the dread of re downloading my games again though haha, I'm still shocked about this!

If your games are on Steam use the backup feature and save them to a hard drive, and then reinstall them from the backup.

Open Steam

Right click on the game

Click Backup Game Files and choose the games you want to backup that are installed.

Next box to appear will give a option of where to save them to, it can be a hdd, usb hdd or even networked computers iirc.

Choose the format but it will be best to choose DVD as that way, you can also burn them to disc if you want.

Click next and then it will back them up.

When you install Steam on the new pc install Steam

Open Steam and click Steam in the top left corner on the menu bar

Click Backup and restore games

Navigate to the folder with the backups and choose each game

It will then reinstall them from the backups and then the only downloads you will need to do will be updates and DLC etc.

Hope that saves you abit of time.

-snip how to backup/restore with steam-

With origin games you can copy the game directories (should be under C:\program files(x86)\origin games) to somewhere.

To reinstall them on your new computer:
- install origin
- start the download of the game(s)
- pause the download and exit origin
- copy your backed up directory to the directory you started installing to before - overwrite any files present (defaults to c:\program files(x86)\origin games\*game directory*)
- restart origin
- restart the download
Origin should now go really fast while it checks the files. Any patches/dlc that you didn't have already may install now as well.

Your save games will require you to either copy the save game folders from your Documents directory (sometimes may be under your user\appdata somewhere) to your new computer or to use the cloud service built into origin to save them to the cloud.

They might have fixed it so that you don't have to start downloading before copying but I don't remember for sure but it used to delete the entire existing game folder before attempting to download.

A little caveat though is that some games (BF3 and BF4) may not get their DLC correctly installed so you may need to fiddle with your registry to get the game to recognise that they are installed. You can find the values required on the EA help and support using google search.
