Maxwell coming sooner rather than later :-/

Dicehunter

Resident Newb
So like a lot of people I just got my 780 and according to Nvidia, Maxwell will be coming a lot sooner rather than later.

Now advancement is a good thing but releasing another line of cards only months after a new line is a sure fire way to **** off a lot of people.

According to recent stats, PC sales are at their record low and if companies like Nvidia start the trend of releasing new products only months after their prior release then that record low is going to get worse.
Consoles are going to overtake PC even more at this rate as people don't want to buy a product knowing it will be old hat in 3 months time where as before it was a nice 12 month window, Giving you time to play, Tinker and enjoy your purchase.

If it is true then what does everyone make of this ?

They won't release the next line for ages I don't think...
They haven't even got all the 700 series out yet have they.

If they do release this year, I can't think of a bigger kick to the teeth for 7xx series and titan adopters.
I know they are a company and they need billions more but come on, Let the pie cool on the window sill for a little bit.

I don't think they will release Maxwell until next year.

I know what you mean though, look what they did with the Titan and the 780.

"oh look guys here's our new fastest card in the world" charges £800

Short time period passes

"oh look guys here's our new 780 it's only slightly slower than a Titan" charges £500

If i'd bought a Titan and then the 780 came along, I would be pretty pissed off. You aren't talking your normal £50 extra quid between cards for that little bit extra performance with the 780 and Titan.
You are talking £300 difference for next to no difference at all.

If Nvidia were to release Maxwell this year it would be the same thing but with the 7xx and the 8xx.

Well put, Speaking from a sort of neutral stand point as I have both PC and Console, If Maxwell does come out this year I can see a lot of people ditching the PC in favour of a PS4 or Xbox One.
Hardware isn't as powerful we all know this but games are optimized up the wazoo and you only have to upgrade once every 5+ years and in that time you have saved up a nice chunk of cash for the next thing.

Apparently according to a few sites I've visited fabrication is starting in Q4 this year and they might be ready by the end of Q2/Q3 next year, If that's true then all is good :)

Don't panic, I can assure you Nvidia won't be releasing any new GPUs this year. The real 780 OC cards aren't even out yet.

AMD on the other hand..

AMD really need to release something this year.

would be silly to release one so quick, but htc have done the same thing they released the htc one x then a few months down the line the htc one x+. not quie the same but is annoyed a lot of people including me.

is maxwell not what we have now?
i thought this was the road map i was remembering

The 6 and 7 series are 28nm Kepler, the next lot of Nvidia cards will be Maxwell 20nm.

ah thanks for clearing that up for me, then maxwell is due anytime then.

There are the rumours that Dicehunter mentioned earlier but I don't think we will see Maxwell until next year. Seems unlikely that they would release a new set of cards so soon after the 7xx series.

yeah would be company suicide, as the development money gone it wont have time to bounce back
