Making a GPU Backplate

Hi

I have a GTX 480, and I have not been able to find a backplate for it. I thought about making one out of a plain black acrylic sheet. Its cheap only £3 for an A4 sized one on eBay. Cutting it shouldnt be too hard.

Has anybody ever done this before? Any tips?

I want a backplate for my GTX 670 (3X WINDFORCE) edition, since its a different backplate from the standard 670. I'll be following this :)

if your going to do it you prob be best using ally. 1. it'll help strengthen the card if you've got a big heavy cooler on it. 2. it might even help to dissipate some heat from the card.
i dunno wot kinda paint you would need but im sure b negative of this forum could tell you that.
then basically jus cut to size file the edges so they are nice and smooth, mark out the screw holes and your dandy.
but you will need to get some new screws too cuz the original screws would'nt be long enough to go through the blackplate and still hold the cooler on too.

hope that helps

Thanks for the replies

I will just be using the stock cooler that came with the card, the backplate is for purely aesthetic purposes.

Also, I dont have any power tools that can cut metal. Would a hacksaw do it?

I was thinking acrylic because its cheap and im not looking for it to serve any performance purpose. What is the reason acrylic isn't suitable?

I did read that a reference gtx 680 backplate will fit onto my card, but then it will say GTX 680 on it :( Maybe im being too picky ? I think I'll drop B-NEG a PM and see what he says about it :) Thanks dude :D

yh it would do it would just take a little longer thats all.
the main reason i woudnt use it is the heat issue. i mean yh it might not actually be that hot but if your gaming for 3 -4 hours at a time thats definitely going to have some sort of affect on it. and you can get sheet ally cheap enough anyway so it still wont cost alot
