M.2 SSD advice needed

Hi all,

I took the plunge this week an bought myself the beginnings of a new build, the list is as follows-
CPU - Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6GHz (Coffee Lake)
Motherboard - Asus Maximus XI Gene
Ram - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB Kit DDR4 3200MHz RAM
GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 1080Ti SC2
PSU - Asus ROG Thor 850W 80 Plus Platinum
CPU cooler - ASUS ROG Ryujin Performance AIO
Case - Cooler Master MasterBox Lite 3.1 mATX Case

Out of all these parts the thing that I'm stuck on is what SSD to use as the Gene motherboard has 4 mounts for M.2's I would like to use them as there would less cables to hide in the case.

Any advice on my first world problem would be great.

Thanks Al

Cheapest one you can find which supports nVME and is an adequate size.

Pretty much this. If you have ADATA drives available locally to you, check them out. 95% as fast as the Samsung equivalent, MUCH cheaper. Highly recommend their SX8200 Pro, or even non-pro for that matter.

Well after spending a few hours the cheapest that's available is the Intel 660p Series 512GB M.2 SSD at £69.95

Thanks for the advice guys :)

I got the Corsair M510 it was the best I could find that was somewhat on par with the samsung 970 I got the 1tb version of the corsair and it was about £60 cheaper than the 970 but real world use Idk how much speed is too much or too little tbh.

Me too, in my other rig. Quality kit for the buck.

About the only two SSDs I would trust are Intel and Samsung. Well, I say trust, but what I mean is "Have at least small hope they won't just up and vanish like a fart in the wind one day".

Have had nearly every other brand fail.

The Samsung 970 is kind of pricey but, I literally just got done putting one in my rig. Quite fast. Im pleased with it.
Got the same drive, it's fast but so are all other nVMEs, and the Samsung costs a premium. :P

It's at the point where extra speed gives very minimal benefit, actually under heavy IO my CPU is sometimes the limiting factor, possibly because not many have bothered to make parallelised IO? Could also be something entirely different like decompressing game files.

You guys get ADATA down there?

Yes we do. I was talking about the high speed NVMe x4 drives. Most drives are the same as more expensive. Although looking at Adata they are cheaper slightly slower still.

Looking more into it Samsung drives got more expensive. Wonder when that happened... Went from low $80 to almost $100 for a 250GB.

I was talking NVME too. At least here when you look at the 1TB range, the price difference between Adata and Samsung gets sizeable. When I bought, the Sammy was about $130-$140CDN more expensive than the SX8200. It is slightly slower, but not by much, and compared to the savings, it's a big cost savings for about 90-95% of the performance.

Thanks for the great advice and as of last night myself and ChronoCabal put the build together, the only hold up is waiting for the Win 10 updates to do their thing. I'll try to upload some pictures asap
