I *MIGHT* be onto something. I dropped my VCore and put my CPU speed to its previous SPi max speed. SPi still finished so that takes part of the blame off the CPU. I changed my RAM divider to 166, and changed Tref to match it. Spi finished at one of the CPU speeds where I`d previously crashed straight away.

What I think: Its possible that Opterons (or at least mine) dont support a 183 divider, which I was using previously. When I set a 183 divider, Clock-Gen and CPU-Z saw it, but not the Opteron, so my RAM was beyond what it could do? (still a disappointing <255 then)

When I set a 183 divider, Clock-Gen and CPU-Z saw it, but not the Opteron

For what it's worth my 148 doesn't play nice with that divider either, the non-standard dividers really are a pain. Perhaps stick to the standard 133/166 dividiers until you establish the max cpu clocks and then work up from there. I use this tool for working out the dividers A64MemFreq 1.1

Hey! hows it goin? Sorry to keep naggin y`all but things are still not peachy.

I hooked up my Mach2 again last night, and had much better contact. Thing is... with MOST (will get onto that in a sec ) of the timing changes Jaffa and Mav suggested applied in BIOS, I couldnt get past 220HTT, even with the RAM on a divider. I was using ClockGen, and the rig would hang when I confirmed the OC. Is it possible I have the worst cold-bug in the universe? I know ppl are hitting up to 3.6GHz with a bl**dy VapoPE but I`ve yet to see 2.5 with mine, and its a good stepping.

Moving onto RAM timings- I was having some stability trouble after I made all the changes suggested. I went back to the BIOS and applied them a few at a time. Everything goes fine until I get onto Max Async Latency, Max Async Bypass, pre-amble and R/W Queue Bypass. Obviously the way to avoid it is to not change these, but how big a difference would they make..what do they do?

Sorry for the million and one questions, but i`m going insane here! I`m considering blaming my Mach and selling that, so things must be bad!!

Don't change em til you find out what your max overclock is.

But the difference it makes is not as significant as the 2-2-2-6 settings, it's is fine tuning the ram to the absolute best not just great - is it important? Not unless you are so close to world record that you needs every gramme of performance available.

If all else fails - change your MOBO.

Kenny, one last note try changing the HTT bus multipliers from AUTO to 4x or 3x inthe BIOS.

Someone said coldbug. DAMNIT!!!! yes it was obvious but I wanted to avoid those 2 hypenated words. Will maybe try again tonight with fluffing to keep my CPU occupied.

This CPU will do just shy of 3GHz on water, yet cant hit 2.5 on phase?? Somethings not right there....

heres a dilemma....sell my CPU for an X2 or sell the Mach?

try upping the voltage to 1.6v+, will give you a lot higer temps
