Loosing access to external hard drive

Hey guys

Suddenly this problem showed up and dont really know what to do. Out of the blue my pc and external hard drive refused me giving access to certain maps. I could not change it in my security settings because once i tried to save them it gave me failure sign. The amount of maps that were refusing to open increased every moment.

One thing to admit, i recently re-installed everything but i did forgot to instal an anti-virus program. Stupid me i know, normally this is the first thing i do.

I plugged the drive out just to be safe but i dont know what to do now. I instantly installed avast and gave it a scan. But that scan was done in less that a minute which i find quite strange knowing its a drive of 3TB and has a total amount of 2.5TB of data atm.

Anyone with a solution? It has everything i have from music/image collections to all my work of school :/

How exactly is it connecting to your machine? Directly in a NAS? External enclosure to a modem or something?

Are you able to test with different cables and ports if you havent already done so?

Have you dropped it recently?

Any chance you would be able to open it up and take the internal HDD out and install it into a desktop or different enclosure (bear in mind that this would void your warranty if you had any)?

If you were to send the drive in for warranty you would not only risk your privacy but your data as well.

Wel its connected through USB3, i'm talking about a WD MyBook 3TB.
I have never dropped it cause it just stands behind one of my screens and it has never been moved. Once i pull it out, shut down internet and restart my pc and put the drive back in, its back to normal.

Yesterday the same thing happened again, but this time something 'extra' happened. Suddenly out of the blue my Documents folder said that i had multiple internal CD players in my pc, knowing that i have NONE i was quite shocked and stressed to see this. I should've taken a printscreen so i'd be able to show it.

I scanned all my drives 3 times but it didnt find anything yet, though i've got the feeling that something or someone is pulling some strings in my pc on the background and roaming free.

Does the PC work correctly without the external drive ?

Have you tried different USB ports (even if USB 2)

Can you try the external drive on a different PC to see if the problem recurs there ?

When you reinstalled, did you remember to install the mobo's chipset and usb drivers ?

The SATA to USB controller is failiing. remove the casing of the HDD and try connecting it internally directly with the PSU and sata port on your motherboard. You should see all your files and no further issues :) It's quite a common issue it has happened to me a couple of times too!
