Looking or 200mm Fan

Hey everyone,

I recently built my new rig in a Corsair 650D. Overall I'm very happy with the case. However the stock fans were a bit to noisy for my taste. I did some research and found out that some of the early 650D case have a problem with their fans being noisy at low and medium speed. Corsair offers a free fan kit that is supposed to resolve this issue. I installed it and it is .. better, but not great. One of the two 200mm fans is still "buzzing". And I want to replace it.

So I looked into 200mm fans and it seems there are not a whole lot of choices out there. I guess I'm looking for the "ideal" fan: silent and lots of air being moved. Since it's hard hard to get both I was hoping you guys could tell me what you think about some of the options out there. Money is not an issue.

Here are some fans I looked at.

- might have a problem with the molex connector here

Antec Big Boy

I could not find much data on fans from other manufactures. Maybe you can help me out here.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate any thoughts, comments or feedback.

I had the Antec 900 a few years back and that came with a big boy fan up top. I set it to high and used a fan controller to take it down to as low an rpm as possible - I couldn't hear it unless my ear was right up against it.

NZXT also do 200mm fans I have a couple in my Phantom - they're not bad. It's difficult though as noise is such a subjective thing, the only real thing you can do is buy a few, plug them into a fan controller or use a good ole Zalman Fanmate or an inline resistor. Most fans though will require a minimum voltage to start...

Thanks for the quick reply :]

From what I've read my favorite is the CoolerMaster Storm Force, but - it has a molex connector. Would that mean that I'd have to run it a full speed all the time? Or is there a way to hook it up to a 3 or 4 pin connector? Then I could use it with the fan controller.

If not the Antec Big Boy might be the way to go.

Would this be what I'm looking for?

According to that link you posted on the CM site the storm force fan comes with both 2pin + molex. This means that there is no r.p.m sensor. A fan normally has 3 wires the yellow one being the r.p.m. sensor.

A standard molex has 4 wires 1 red, 1 yellow and 2 black. Between the red and black is 5v, and between the yellow and black is 12v.

You can buy a molex to fan cable which will give you both high and low in a single cable.

Fan Adpater Cable

i.e. 5v for the red & black and 12v for the yellow & black.

I have used these cables to hard wire a fan to run at 5v so that it will run silently, however some fans do not start reliably at 5v. When these cables are used in conjuction with a 120mm Yate Loon or Nexus Real Silent case fan they are brilliant.

Awesome post sheroo, thank you. I think the 2 pin on the Storm Force is for the LED. I ended up getting a few of these: http://www.performance-pcs.com/cata...id=608&zenid=99cf5aaa8011ad0580379697ab942fb8

Hope those will work.

I was having trouble finding a retailer that still has the CoolerMaster Storm Force. A lot of sites had things up like: "product may not be restocked" or "product may have been discontinued." Oddly enough a lot of African sites have them. But in the end I was able to find a US retailer.

Here's an unboxing of a Megaflow fan:-

Looks like it comes as standard with a 3 pin female fan connector. Then you get a 3 pin male connector to molex passthrough.

As standard the red & black wires of the fan connector are connected to the yellow & black of the molex and will run at 12V. If you swap the molex wires around you can make a passthrough connector that will run at 5V.

I beleive the Storm Force fans are the ones they use in thier Storm series cases I.E. Sniper and Scout I have the Sniper and it has them in it I was so like cool finally they have those for sale as I wanted to change the color of mine (blue to red) Anywho that might be why you cant find them for sale everywhere but you can find the megaflow's I didnt want the megaflows due to the Storms have the extra fan wires one for fan one for led to wire into the cases built in fan/led controller where did ya find the Storms at???? and yes the mega's come with the molex to 3pin adapters included so you can fan control them

I wish Noctua would make 200mm fans ;]

I wish the fanboy(girl)ism would end lol

bitfenix just released a 200mm spectre that you could take a look at?

I hear very mixed reviews but they are defiantly cheap and cheerful fans.

xigmatek also do a 200mm although I know nothing of it
