Microsoft plans to market several versions of Vista but will distribute all of the OS bits with every product shipped so users can easily unlock and step up to more full-featured versions using electronic keys, sources said.

"No matter which edition you buy you get all the bits and a key to unlock it. Everyone will have all the bits," said one source familiar with Microsoft's plans. "Right now we maintain master images for each version of Windows XP and it's a lot of work. Now there's just one master image."

:rollingla Leave it to MS to make their software hackable :rollingla I really can't stop laughing

Execellent, now I really wont have to pay for vista ultimate uber edition (which is probably just normal vista with the logo "ultimate uber edition" as you start it up)

microsoft must be realising that people like the ability to change software...this is good imo as it means that users can customise there windows to what they would like, not just have what everyone else has

Actually this has absolutely nothing to do with what you just said... :0wned:

I'm sure they will find someway to stop us. Lets hope the hackers are better as useual. I think I'll still be on XP for some time to come, so gives them plenty of time to work it out.

-Not that I ever hack/use illigal software, dont even know how to. Like everyone at SX, honest-

Doubt it, they haven't managed too well with 2003, you can use a trial as a full version, you can use a program to switch between the product you're using (for XP, its Home and Pro and Whistler, and For 2003, its Home, Pro, and all the types of Server 2003). They tried making it impossible to use Windows Update unless you have a genuine copy of Xp, but that can be got past stupidly easily too. If they want to stop people hacking Vista, they're going to have to work very hard.

I think mircosoft need to sit down and think through their ideas more.

i find it so funny, you would of thought that when they announced this that people would just laugh and go "how long till its hacked" etc - but maybe they will have the last laugh?? maybe they have some tricks up their sleaves??

I very much doubt it! ah well well done mircosoft.... By the time vista sp1 for vista is released we could well be all on googles os ;) who knows

Think this makes a lot of sense, with the current state of p2p and broadband connections, anyone who wanted to pirate an upgrade was just going to download another iso anyway. If making several different masters isn't going to stop anyone stealing your product and it costs you more why bother?

Although all the bits will be there, you wont be able to get at them and you wont have a licence to legally use them unless you have a key for the most expencive version.

As it makes upgrading much easier without the need to reinstall, it's actually a good thing for people who are buying vista legally. Think it's great they're not getting bogged down it piratephobia, wish more people would follow suit.

Not that i'll be buying it mind you, XP is fine from where i'm sitting. Hell we're still using windows 98 at work..

edit

just read the whole article, and makes even more sense now then it did before. this bit worried me tho

The consumer versions include Vista Starter Edition, Vista Home Basic Edition and Vista Home Premium Edition, the report said. The business lineup includes Vista Professional Edition, Vista Small Business Edition, Vista Enterprise Edition and Vista Ultimate Edition.

So many versions i suspect you'll need to pay a fortune if you actually want to use any of the more powerful features. Could drive away people if they haven't picked what they include with each version very carefully, unless they have a clever system whereby you can unlock the things you need rather then upgrading to a completely new version..

I feel that MS are doing the right thing, Obviously its easier - more economic from their stand point to merely issue KEYS.Piracy will take place whatever they do - they can't allow it to have an overbearing influence on their business. As previously stated XP was available ahead of release and doubtless this edition will also. MS will continue to sell to their already established market.

@ mimp

Thats tthe whole point of the system - you get the whole package and I think if you try to use a feature thats disabled you get the option of buying it. Pay-per-play if you will

Makes sense from a financial perspective BUT this will be pirated: before launch I would expect ;)

omg everyone and their mom will have a full featured, all options unlocked version hacked a month before it hits shelves, lol.

This is a stupid smart idea, I think they're going to find out really quick that it's going to bite em in the ass and take a small chunk.
