LGA 1155 vs 2011?

Simple question what socket should i get (budget isn't too much of an issue the question is more will i use the extra power):

- Asus IV Extreme with 3930k

or

- Asus V Extreme with 3770k

What i use my PC for is some video editing, gaming and whole host of random other stuff but im think the money i save could buy another GPU etc...

If it's only 'some' video editing the 3770K is the one for you.
Depending on how much video editing you have to do, you may even get away with a 3570K and save some more money. The hyperthreaded-ness of the i7 gives you around 30% more performance in multithreaded applications.

Well the 3930K and 3770K aren't comparable because one is a hexcore. I'd suggest that for your uses you take the 1155. If you are mostly gaming the the i5 3570K is the way to go. The 3770K will help a bit with the video editing but it's not a deal breaker from what you've said.

Put it this way - if you are mostly gaming then don't spend the money on the i7 and get a poorer GPU as a result.

Omega,
i'd consider the 1155 platform for your work load. the 2011 would be a great
platform, but a budget can get really blown-up on 2011.
the 1155 ivey with 2133 RAM and mid- to highend systemboard would prolly tide
your tasks pretty well. and then you cand get deep into GPU(s) if necessary.

for systemboards:
ASUS Maximus V
MSI GD65 or MPower
Gigabyte UP7 (if you can dig the orange)

airdeano

There are a lot of great z77 boards out there - you can't go far wrong but my top pick would be the MSI z77 mpower.

I'am on the same point as you, have that lovely MPower. And it do what i ask it to do. The only problem i have, that is my CPU is a bad one ;)

- But Omega, it is up to you and what kind of color you will like. The MPower is back/yellow. And the light on it is blue. That will show the power the board is useing.

Id say Z77 too, 2011 is overkill unless you are using that power all the time.

Mobo wise the Asus is lush. Im not sure on your colour plans for the new rig though?

I'd recommend 1155 too unless you're doing a lot of video editing. Even then, a 3770K is definitely no slouch.

As for motherboards I'm a firm believer that if God built a PC, he'd use an Asus Sabertooth. They are just superb boards and built like freaking tanks and in my opinion, they're the best boards for any platform in terms of sheer stability, durability and build quality. I've had 1.5 volts running thru my gargantuan 8150 at 4.8 GHz and mine never flinched.....my H100 on the other hand did. LOL

The MSI M Power would be my 2nd choice cause I'm really liking their stuff lately and they're being reviewed really well.

Bugger it if you have the cash blow it all on a 2011 with 3970x. 64gb corsair dominators.
If its just for the occasional bit of simple editing. As above - 3570k or 3770k paired with a ROG, mpower or sabretooth mobo.

Well the orginal colour scheme me and neg are trying to stick to is white/black and copper but getting a mobo that fits that is hard but i dont mind a tiny bit of another colour on the mobo if it just there...

Along with a possible 3570k or 3770k you might want to look at Toms review of the MSI Z77A GD65 motherboard. It's got 8 sata conectors as apposed to 6 on the MPower, if you need the extra two. Its alsoa little bit less expensive than the MPower.
