Since I am planning a build in the very near future, I've settled on the i5 3570k and an Asrock motherboard. The mobo will likely be updated a few months down the road but right now I want to retire my current AMD system and get something with some speed, hence the 3570k.

The one thing I am still absolutely flabbergasted on is the incredibly wide and cheap variety of ram on the market now. 4GB is generallly about $25 in my area and it doesnt matter if its 1333, 1600, or 1866mhz. What i get doesnt ahve to be uber-awesome as anything will be an upgrade from my 800mhz junk.

Obviously I would like to take maximum advantage of the FSB of the new CPU.
So my choices in that regard are pretty much between 1600 and 1866mhz. Is there a point in getting 1866 when the chip supports 'up to 1600mhz' ?

Is it better to just put 1600mhz on auto and leave it? Yes my noob badge is shining brightly for all to come stare at (and heckle.)I'm just really lost on this.

Thanks for any input you guys may feel like sharing. (jokes are welcome :) )

Most 3570K's are capable of 2400 memory with tweaks in the bios, 2133 is an absolute guaranty tbh.

BTW the FSB = front side bus. And you leave that alone nowadays ;) (n000b badge shown)

The only noob question is the one not asked.
There is no shame in getting advice.....

Yar, I realise FSB = Front Side Bus :P

On your advice I'll get the 2133 because I do plan on overclocking this eventually, after I can get the H100. It'll work well enough with a stock fan and moderate OC for a while. If I have any problems tweaking the timings in BIOS I'll e calling your shop to ask you for advice. Besides, I get $100 a month in international calls that I dont use and the UK rates are pretty cheap :P

I think its the smilye faces that messed up my FSB because I put parenthesis after it ;)

Dude things have changed massively recently.

Buy the ram speed you want, timings make NO difference on Ivy its all about the bandwidth (MHz)

I think you're mistaking OC3D with OCUK?

Oh no. I am here spcifically because of our Trusty Guvnor. Ive been watching his clips on youtube for the past few weeks. I could only guess that Time To Live
Customs was the name of his shop/business. Dont know if its a hobby or not. Fill me in please :D

Ok, 2133 it is. Its been a long while since I did any real enthusiast type computing. Most of what I do now is running machines at work. When I get home I try to relax with some gaming and/or highly educational clips from TTL.

Ive still got an Athlon X2 at 3Ghz. That should tell you how long I've been out of the loop. :D

I just want to see if I've got this right: get the 3570k, motherboard, and 2133mhz ram and slap it together and leave the ram on auto? because the timings mean zilch?

Or am I goingto have to go into bios and set the timings manually.

Tom, I dont know if youve got a clip associated with this amongst the 500 clips youve already done, but if not, it might be a good idea for one.

In your review of the 8350 you said you couldnt get the ram to run at 1866 or anything else and just set it to 1600 and left it. I had wondered what speed ram you were using. 1600?

you have to manually set ram up if its above 1333mhz mate.

When you overclock your cpu you just set it all up then. You will need a decent cooler though, stock coolers are banned here :D

I plan to get the Corsair H100, might do 40 fans on it. Dont know for sure yet ;) Summer is coming on so that might not be a bad idea :) I would like to at least do a push/pull configuration, though 40 fans would be sweet :) If I lived in the UK I would come to your place and get you to do the rig for me. I've never let anyone build a pc for me so that would be a first.

OK, rechecking to see if I've got this right (you keep throwing tidbits of info out there) 1600mhz ram set to run at 1333 then when im ready with the H100 throw in some 2133 and set timings?

I think im getting more confuzzed by the minute, but I'm not sure. :P

All ram when started up first time will run @ 1333.

You have to set it up in the bios to run any quicker.

40 fans was a troll video dude its no cooler than 4 fans.

H100 is a great cooler if set up right with the right fans though :)

As for coming to TTL Towers its like the Bat Cave... Only me Robin and Alfred know where it is ;)

This is a gaming build unless things have changed so my opinion is not to worry about RAM bandwidth anymore than you need to. You are going to be GPU limited first so you don't need awesome RAM.

Unless you can find a good deal on 2133 get something a little slower. 1600Mhz is great at the moment. If I was building new I'd probably look for 1866 because the price difference isn't much.

You'll only need 8gb for the time being. I'd get 2x4gb sticks and then when 8gb becomes too little for you (which is probably not in the immediate future) then just get another 2 sticks and make it 16gb in total.

I will just follow the trail of Batman and Robin droppings

The 40 fans looked awesome, whether it made any difference or not :) I would be the first on my block to have that setup :P

Master&Puppet, Yes this is a gaming rig. There are 2 brands of 1866 at my local shop for $50 & $51, for 8GB (2x4GB) or I could go the 2133 for $58 for 8GB (2x4GB) I kind of like this one for $55 as my system is black and blue

Pretty cheap either way. I'm following the leaders on this one though. Thats you guys. I honestly dont know what to get, its all about the same price - cheap.

Well those prices don't make much difference so I suppose it really doesn't matter!

All I'd say is prioritise other components first. 1600Mhz is all you need so if those $7 are going to stop you getting the H100 or an SSD in the short term then I'd go cheaper. Probably not an issue though.

After an enquiry with Thermaltake abooumy Dokker case regarding fitting either the Corsair H100, or Thermaltake Water 2.0 Extreme in the top of my case, the response was a bit worrysome. They said I would be able to fit the Water 2.0 Extreme at the top but that I might not be able to install certain ram modules.

This brings me to a a few questions:
1. How far are the DDR3 DIMMs from the top of the MSI Z77A GD65 motherboard?
2. How tall is Corsair Vengeance® — 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ16GX3M2A1866C10R) ??? Or similar modules.

After looking at the G.Skill TRident X, I see that it is over 2" tall, but it has a removable heatspreader. No dimensions are given as to the height of the modules with the heatspreader removed.

3. How tall is your DDR3 from the face of the motherboard?

It Looks like I will have about 50mm clearance from the face of the motherboard to about where the fans will be. I dont know that the fans from either cooling system will be in the way of the DIMM's because I dont know how far the DIMMS are from the top of the mobo. I know I'll have about 30mm from the top of the case to the top of the mobo. I'm thinking of I get the H100 it will have less chance of even covering the DIMM's as the radiator is thinner.

Got any ideas guys?
