Last straw with windows..

The thing is, is after a while Windows has been known to re-write itself over time and lord only knows why. Most of the time when it does that and you defrag and move everything around Windows has no idea what you did with it, or what it did with itself lol. Best idea usualy is to have most everything backed up periodicaly just in case something happens cause one of your files might have gotten infected then you backed that up ect. Im sure you know what im talking about. A usual format for performance reasons is a good idea.

/me is sick at the thought of Windows ME

I`m sorry, I was way out of order bringing that up.

Still, it made m$ hundreds of millions, and that`s what it`s all about - aint it ?

So basically im screwed until a format? :p

I just got froze up while speaking to toxcity...I pressed ctrl alt delete like 10 minutes before...then it decided to popup, stop responding...take everything with it but my music was still playing and tox said my ping went skyhigh?

Yea xoftspy found nuthing and theres literally 0.00% fragmentation

I spose i could order that hdd now and backup with it internally until enclosure comes

Firefox is using 38,100k ish and there practically nothing using cpu *goes to check event viewer*

Which category in event viewer?

Try "System" and "Application"

You're looking for yellow triangles or red & white crosses. Double click the ones that have appeared recently and they'll tell you what program/resource is causing the trouble.

Ok was just in the process of listing loads and yep...it froze up making my music loops and all that writing gone..AND NOTHING TO NOTE IT IS IN EVENT VIEWER

Is there a possibility it could be hardware? I just want to cut it down to one thing

personally, i think it could be your hard drive, but i cant say for sure. Try downloading a linux live cd and run that for a while. It will tell you if its hardware or software depending on how well it runs. (maybe in my thery). Give Ubuntu live cd a try!

Definitely HD related.

What mode is the drive operating in? Device Manager > IDE/ATAPI Controllers > Primary IDE Channel > Advanced Settings.

Transfer mode should be "DMA if available".

Current transfer mode should be around "Ultra DMA mode 5 or 6" or more depending on the drive.

If Device 0 is in PIO mode, try changing it to DMA, if it drops back to PIO on it's own later that's more than likely your problem. There's a fault with the drive and Windows has knocked it down to PIO so the drive can cope.

Best bet would be to back up and run a drive diagnostic program, might be one available on the manufacturers site. You may end up having to re-format.

Although I would go with what most people are saying and try reformatting but I have had hassle in the past with some anti virus programs. Causing everything from hanging to not shutting down. Unfornately the same fix applies to that.

Setting all to default didnt help, HDD is in "DMA mode if availiable" and current transfer mode is "not applicable" so im gonna run "seatools" now to test it. I've also lost my windows disk atm

Just doing some scouting about at the mo.

Do your optical drives come back as "Current transfer mode - Not Applicable as well?"

I am starting to think there is a conspiracy theory where windows is updating a bug to slow the system down so we all rush out and buy vista. A couple of my mates are having the same sort of problems as you are, and have asked me to look, in all honesty I have told them I will do a quick check and then take the easy option if need be.

It could also point to a virus that is mega clever but I think that would have been found by now.

Optical drive is at Ultra DMA 5

Trying that guide left it at not applicable again. About to get my xp disk back off a friend (how it got there i will never no) and hopefully a successful format. My hdd passed both the short and long test which is nice :)
