Laptop Ram

Hello.

I've recently purchased an Alienware M11x for myself but am a bit stuck regarding the ram, I'm hoping someone can help.

When ordering the page stated 2gb as standard but to upgrade to the 8gb that I wanted was going to cost £200. Now surely this is daylight robbery? I had a check on Dell's own store for ram and buying direct from them, for the ram they state is for the M11, would be £72 for the 8gb (2x4gb).

I asked a 'live chat' staff member about the different costs during the order stage and he said that the extra cost was for the installation. Isn't an installation fee of £128 rather excessive?

I just bought it with the 2gb hoping I could just order some ram from somewhere else. But I'm a bit stuck as Dell show ram modules, that appear to be the same, for different models of laptop. They all seem to have different prices too. Isn't the ram for the laptop standard? Can I just buy 1333mhz sodimms from anywhere and they'll be ok?

I've had a look on Crucial but can't seem to find the M11x listed. Had a look at Scan and found some Corsair Vengeance 1333mhz for £40, would this be ok?

Sorry if this is all rather silly but with Dell quoting this 1333mhz ram for this laptop and that 1333mhz ram for that laptop it's got me a bit worried about compatibility.

Thank you.xx

Thank you for the responses, appreciated. Judging from them I do have to get ram dedicated to the M11x. I'm completely in the dark as to why a laptop would have a ram type dedicated to it, I just thought you could get any any as long as it had the same specifications. But £35 is far cry from the prices dell are quoting so I'm not going to complain. It's the I5 M11x

I'll go right ahead and order this then. Thank you very much for your time.
