How do you get a mirror finish?

i've gone up to 1500 grit, and ive got a semi mirror finish, its still a bit foggy if that is the right term

what should i use next?

2000 grit? Then Tcut then polishing compound?

NP. Polishing ALU is the same thing as polishing clear coat (or laquer). You can get it mirror but prepare to put in the work

well i'm just lapping this old P4 i found with some remnants of a lapping kit off ebay

got the 1500 grit really worn out on one side so its polishing it quite nicely

long way from mirror though

I'm in the same situation, I need to get some lubrication paper, that will sort it out.

You don't need lube paper. Just dampen the sand paper and do it that way. Just make sure you keep it wet the whole time.

and dont get wet on the tech sides of it! but i gotta say lapped cpu and cooler is good stuff

yup like steve-o said , wet it with a few drops with you get to the 1200+ grits. 2000 grit and compound are absolutely overrated. you want certain microscopic holes for the TIM to settle in. Whats more important is FLAT not SHINY .

I'm considering to lap my Noctua NH-D14 when I get it. But I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.

mines seemed super flat mate its the cpu that isnt

Get a metal ruler and hold it over the CPU, then you know which bits to sand more. I used 1500 grit with water to get it nice and smooth after using 240 grit to get it flat. I went; 240, 400, 800, 1500.
