lag from hard drive

I bought a new samsung 80gb 7200rpm 2mb buffer IDE HDD recently. I was expecting to get roughly the same performance as my WD 160GB 7200rpm 8mb buffer IDE HDD. For some reason the performance seems really crappy. Things seem to lag out all over when I'm doing stuff. I don't get a 5 second boot up anymore either. I have a samsung 120gb 5400rpm 2mb buffer drive and it performs better than this.

well the 2mb cache may have something to do with it but i think that your problems go deeper than that.

is it jumpered correctlty?? (never use cable select)

try it on a different ide port. (change over an optical drives if you have to)

why not try using this hdd as a slave and using the faster drive as the master. you will not notice the performance lag as bad if you are only using it for files.

however make sure that there is not a problem with the drive or it is just really rubbish. if you really cant stand the performance then go for a drive with 8mb cache and rma the samsung.

hope i helped

Also check in device manager to make sure that the drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check jumper and DMA mode when I get my ram back. I never even checked the jumper settings. I got this drive oem from store on sale.
