Kali 2 - A rebirth

This build is based off the Clevo P150EM barebone.

The basic shell comprises:

1080P matte screen
HM77 chipset (ivy/sandy support)
HD7970M 2GB GDDR5 (supporting enduro)
4 DDR3 or DDR3L ram slots
1 mSATA slot, 1 SATA slot, 1 ODD Sata slot
Backlit keyboard
Onkyo speakers

I have ordered this along with:

3610QM
256GB Crucial M4 SSD (going in the optical bay)
Intel 6230 ultimate-N with bluetooth

I am also throwing in the following spare parts:

64GB crucial M4 SSD (going to house the OS)
External bluray/DVD-RW drive
8GB 1600mhz CL9 flashed to 1866mhz CL11 Kingston Hyper-X

You can order the barebone from Pwnpcs.co.uk and do a similar build. Their CPU prices are also very reasonable.

Yes this build is a lot more straightforward than the original Kali (and perhaps a little more boring as a result) but I should be able to tweak it to the maximum without worrying about system cut outs.

System arrives on Tuesday.

Couldn't argue at a free CPU upgrade lol, so they installed it for me (top right) effectively paid £140 for a 3610qm OEM.

It all turned out colour coordinated lol bottom middle hatch is where the HDD is hiding, no caddy just slot in and the ODD cady was remove and put the second drive in.

The only "secret" you need to know is how to remove the keyboard.

To the top left of this picture there is a hole you can poke a very thin screwdriver through just where the fan meets the heatsink for the graphics card. This will pop off the speaker cover letting you remove the 5 screws and put in extra ram and put in the wireless card.

Clocks around 1000/1425 on all of them.

Hit a brick wall on the tweaking front.

The graphics bios is not accessible.... so I can't play with the voltages and do all the cool stuff :(

So the rather drastic solution is.....

Is now on the way.....

Firstly I did actually manage to flash the 7970M doing this:

7970lol.jpg

(that's an acer 5935G motherboard that came with a mobility HD4570 lol)

which led to this:

7970Mbios.jpg

Got it up to about 1030-1060mhz core clocks.

However........

Desktop performance anyone?

(for reference, true 680m stock clocks are 719/900)

Oh the wonders of a proper bios

Fine, I get the message, I won't bother posting anything else.

Mods feel free to lock.

I don't think he was being sarcastic, dude.
At least, I HAVE never seen a laptop done before, and it is extremely interesting for me.

Yeh I'm agreeing with the other two comments, we often see people taking on the easy stuff painting a case or fitting a waterblock but I'v only seen one other laptop mod in the last 2 years and 3 or 4 proper mods where they get into the nitty gritty of the pcb and start switching stuff up :) mod on!

Yeah dude, he was being genuine. There was nothing in his post to suggest that he was being sarcastic. Please continue with your work, a lot of people want to see the progress.

EDIT: Maybe the :p made you think that?

Well the complete silence meant I felt like no one was interested so it felt like someone had come in to point out the lack of interest.

To be honest I don't need to play around too much with the internals now.

What I am doing is creating a docking station.

A coolermaster u-stand will provide customisable fan locations and a 3 port usb hub which I will connect a creative scout 3d USB soundcard (connected to my aurora speakers), game controller and mouse.

This means I can plonk it down and only need a single USB cable to connect everything.

A couple of updates, got myself a 3740qm (like a 3720qm but 100mhz faster).

+400mhz on my 3610qm which is nice.

Also unlocked intel xtreme tuning by flashing the p170EM bios:

So +400mhz again thanks to the partial unlock of the 37xx and 38xx processors.

That means my 4 core/3c/2c/1c turbos are 3.9/3.9/4.0/4.1ghz

:)

Holey jeezus.. you are one mad man! :D

What you do is great, you gotta have balls of steel mate.

A little shot of my new desk and docking station :) Got a bit of cable management to carry out but you get the idea.
