Just started Overclocking, any help would be appreciated.

Ok so I just started overclocking my system today. Ive adjusted the voltages, but in bios my temp is showing at 53 degrees celcius idle, is this too hot?Should i just run prime 95 and see how stable it is or attempt to get a lower temp?

I have a C2D e6400 , gigabyte 965p ds3 mobo, 2 gigs crucial 5400 aniversary edition ram, scythe infinity cooler.... I dont really know what else to do. Id like to fix my timings and what not with the memory but im not too sure of how to do this. So far im up to 2.7 ghz i believe.

Thanks for all the helps guys/girls

Are you using the Intel stock cooler?

If you think your memory is hold you overclock use a memory divider so you can scale the CPU to a higher frequency without your memory limiting your overclock.

Those temps are too high for a scythe - way too high. What thermal compound are you using? Arctic Silver 5? Change to Coollabs Liquid Pro that will knock 10 deg C off...

What are your voltages? CPU core, mch, etc? What frequency and multiplier are you using e.g. 400*10 for 4.0ghz? I'm pretty sure your chip clocks better with lower multis...

Guys?

first re-seat the cooler with some new thermal paste (only use a small amount). CLLP doesnt like aluminium so i would be cautious about putting it on an un lapped IHS. Have you taken everything as high as you can stable on stock voltages before upping them?

Ok so, supposedly its running at 47 degrees idle now, im gonna start turning down the voltage i think i had it too high.

lap it :)

if you have the confidence, and more importantly, patience to do it, lap the integrated heat sink. Intel use nickel on the IHS as has been mentioned, which is good for durability ( stops the surface of the ihs getting scratched/dented during heatsink installation) but, nickel has poor conductivity as opposed to copper, and the nickle plating tends to be be rather obviously grainy.

your temps are high for a scythe, my p4 presscott runs at that temp under load with a stock hs whilst overclocked. anyway, ill stop babbling now, but try lapping if you want a cost effective way or bringing temps down.
