Just got cable speed upgrade (at last!!)

Found out a couple of days ago that my ISP had ugraded my connection from 16mbit to 20mbit, but still, there's no change in the downspeed I'm getting, which really bugs me. I should be at 2,5MB/s, but peak at 1,8. :( I called them and put on my angry voice, but they just told me to reset the modem, or that it could be cause I'm constantly downloading and uploading stuff. :P Like that would have anything to do with it...

LOL you see, this is where we play clever in Holland..

We offer a networking system for our neighbours.. we split the cost 50/50 and share the net, although we will suffer from slow net at times.. it's worth it for fast net :)

Was thinking of doing that.. linking multiple houses together on one system LOL! Make them pay more than I pay for my broadband, make some money out of it, though.. isn't that classed as illegal?

Besides being something stupid to do, your ISP doesn't allow 'connection sharing'. How could you ensure that whoever was sharing your connection wasn't doing anything illegal with it (eg looking at stuff they shouldn't or pirating on a large scale etc), and if they were, the buck would stop with you as it would be your IP that had been logged. The potential for trouble is massive!

^ Well that's *******s, your router will have a list of MAC addresses used and that would show that many people use your internet.

I believe an unsecured wireless network has both got people into and out of trouble with the law. Your ISP won't like it and will probably cut you off if they find out, but i've seen it done a few times.

Bristol has city wide free internet so i don't need to search for open networks when i'm in town, but when i was in london i saw a few that were called things like feel "free to use - no porn"

I would imagine a few are honeypots, but some will be genuine. I'd never feel safe using shared wireless if i wasn't close friends/family with everyone on it.

I think a similar thing is done quite often in the rural parts of the states, where decent speeds are expensive. A few people get together and buy a package then use cantenna's and signal boosters to share it.

Beg to differ, but if someone is using your connection for illegal purposes and you have gave them access to that connection, you could also be held responsible.

As far as I can remember, there are seven ISP's in the UK who explicitly ban ISP sharing between contract holders and third parties, and if found to be doing so the contract holder would have their contract terminated.

As for the illegal activities, if there was to be an investigation due to one of the third parties carrying out illegal activities, the first port of call from the police would be at the account holders address. If there was evidence that the account holder did nothing or not enough to prevent the activity from occuring, they would be charged either as an accessory or an accomplice.

Whilst good in principle, sharing your internet connection with anyone other than close friends or family is a minefield. Even then, the onus is on you to ensure that no illegal activity is occuring using your ISP account, and you still have to do it without your ISP finding out. Hardly something to be recommending is it?!

I was just about to switch from virgin media to SKY.. I already have virgin internet and phone then sky tv. But we were going to go all over to sky.

BUT it turns out when sky say 16MB it means UPTO 16mb so the majority of people wont actually be getting 16MB, in our area the sky connection would only allow upto 2MB which is dire. So we rang virgin and threatened to leave, they cut our phone bill by half and internet by half. Which meant we could they upgrade to SKY+HD and movies and still be paying £20 less than before :worship::worship:

i read through virgin's throttling thing but didn't think i'd be in the 'top 1%' ffs... how many customers do they have?

i keep getting throttled recently :( saying that i've downloaded alot of 720p weekly shows and various 1080p movies :S eek... not sure what my total is for this month.. but we've never been warned or anything...

we upped to 20mb as we were fed up of waiting for 4 to turn into 10,

i loved how they could switch 20 on in a second but 10 took months.. ah well..

throttling sucks :( it's not as though THAT many people are online at 2am is it?

saying that it went back up on my upload speed about 2:30 so i dno

*shrug*

The 30GB bandwidth limit is a piece of crap, surely playing a PC game online for a few hours every night for 3 days doesn't cut your speed down?

20mb, and I get download speeds of 160-500kbps MAX when capped.

I got 600kbps on my 2mb connection constant.

I HATE VIRGIN

Edit:

Virgin just sucks. We've switched over to Sky now, 16mb, unlimited bandwith. And sky was voted no. 1 of the best ISPs.
