Issues when OCing new i5 2500k and asus board

Edit:: I returned the mobo and got an Asus sabertooth p67. Installed, updated, and was able to get a nice smooth 4.5 GHz oc on my i5 running prime95 clocking max temp so far at 68c. Run for little over an hour so far. Seems smooth.

Long story short im very happy w/ the new board.

I was giving a p8p67 LE and i5 2500k as an early xmas gift because my old motherboard went belly up on me.

Anyways, I dove into this one and started to play w/ the overclock features (learn quickly this board restricts alot of them in the bios) . However it is the exact same board my buddy is using on his i7 2600k.

Long story short. If I manually over clock my board to say 4.0 or 4.5, everything goes great temps stay nice and cold even under full load and stress testing. However... here is my issue. The cpu at idle never lowers its self back to that 1.6 when just sitting still. It will stay at 4.0 or 4.5, whatever I set it to.

Interestingly enough if I load the AI suite II software and alow the auto config to overclock the system I find that it does work. It will auto config my system to some strange Bclk Frequency and overclock it on its own to about 4.6 and some change. This seems to work and I can watch the cpu on load ramp up as it is supposed to and lower while off load.

Anyone at all have any ideas on what I could be missing or what adjust this in the bios when im doing the oc my self?

I would leave it as it is, you don't need 4ghz for browsing web and stuff, it will step to your oc when it needs to, auto. Also keeping your cpu @ 4-4.5 24/7 will just shorten the life. its a great feature that also save your electric bill.

Its why you only overclock the turbo core.

I don't want it at 4 ghz for web browsing that is why im trying to figure out why the speedstepping is not working.

I think you miss understood what I mean buy auto tune. The Mobo has software that auto overclocks your system and sets everything up. It makes me uncomfortable the strange settings they the program picks. This or I miss understood you.

I have this comp built for gaming, that is pretty much it. For some reason on mine it just seems strange when I oc'd it.

My buddies pc who has the exact same mobo but the i7 2600k, we oc'd it the exact same way I was doing it on mine however his speedstep is working great. Im thinking im just missing something simple.

I am waiting on an update to finish then im going to poke around in the bios again and try and figure out what i missed.

The option is called speed step as far as I remember. I'm not sure where it is exactly without looking at the bios.

EDIT: I just watched a Youtube Video and you need to go to the AI Tweaker page and then CPU Power Management. The option is called Enhanced Intel Speedstep technology.

I think I have an issue w/ the mobo. When I did the overclock I triple checked that the speed stepping is on. The over clock worked great but watching cpuid the speed rate never dropped below 4.0 It stay at that rate just sitting there.

Speed stepping only seems to work if I let the software overclock the system. It doesn't make any sense. Even if I go in and set everything to match what the software does. Speedstepping does not work.

Sometimes when you change a setting it doesn't stick. Did you re-check that Speed Step was enabled? It happened to me a few times, where I would make some changes and "save and reset," only to find out that the settings had not been saved.

Yea, by default it seems to be on. However I did go back after checking the os and cpu-z for a few mins, it was indeed enabled. Im going to follow the exact settings the guy in the video has. What is strange is it looks the exact same as the way the "auto" feature does.

It is strange, but I've read/heard about it happening on the regular p8p67 boards quite a lot.

I just followed that guy in the video exactly. STill now not lower core speed at idle. I can not get it to work . It only seems to work if I unOverclock it or use the auto feature.

Are you disabling Turbo Boost as well?

You also need to set the CPU ration (multi) in CPU power management when you disable Speedstep and not in the main menu when manually overclocking.

have you tried flashing the mobos bios to the latest version?

only it could be an issue with that version of the bios.
