Is Vista worth it?

Ok, right now I'm booting XP (primarily for games), Ubuntu and Gentoo.

I've got everything set up nicely and wasn't considering upgrading to vista but MS have a n offer on with my uni to get Vista Ultimate upgrade for £40.

So, is DX10 and the other features worth it? It'd upgrade from xp, so it'd be my only gaming OS.

Edit: Also, I've heard of serious incompatibility/bugs with the 64bit version - I'm running C2D.

When Vista x64 first came out, the bugs were rife then.. but not it's a worth while upgrade.

I can throughly recommend it. I was on XP for ages, then I had a chance to upgrade to Ultimate x64.. I would never go back. Never have I once had a failure or incompatabilities/bugs.. only on one thing, that was Max Payne 1.. which is understandable.

All the 32bit applications I've thrown at it has worked so far.

fair enough, I think I'll go for it, if nothing else for DX10.

for £40, I don't think I could refuse.

no, you get a full copy of vista ultimate (or wahtever your upgrade edition is) and it install normally, simply adding a check that you have an installed ms os already on then wipes that an installs the new os.

More than enough to run it. Personally I`d think of more memory if I`m heavy fps gaming with vista, but it isn`t an immediate concern and u may well be happy with what u got depending on ur game(s) and apps.

All my rigs are running Vista and I've never had a problem with it. Like Rastalovich said you could look at more memory if you're into gaming, but 2GB will be fine.

I upgraded to 4GB and got Ultimate x64, only problem i've had is my mouse drivers. Rest is awesome. So smooth.

Been on Vista x64 for a month now, i can honestly say, that i find it throwing out apps much quicker. For example my loaded with bookmarks and addons firefox always took 5 secs to load on xp, on vista 1 sec, baaam here it is. Much better lay out and quicker to find and click on things :D i lover my quick launch taskbar, the icons are huge :P

Ive got Vista Home Premium.

But since Ive installed my new mobo its saying it is not genuine because it doesn't recognize the key.

And I cant re-install/reactivate vista as I do not have a vista cd.

So im going to need to buy it again.

Or just buy XP! :D

What should i do???

If u have no keys or product id from the original install, ur pretty screwed. Otherwize they'll activate it for u over the phone or txt message.

vista started off crap, its dragged its way up, but imo, it still has a way to go...

however, feed it plenty of ram, and its usually happy...

1 thing I will say, I dont think any1 should consider one of the high dollar retail packs right now.

OEM it if u have to, and an offer of £40 is a good one for a full Vista.

Around this time next year it's rumored we'll be on the sled of a Window 7 promotion. I'm keen myself, starting right now, to put some serious cash aside for both 'it' and either an AM3 or i7 build (banking on gfxcard etc too) - details obviously will be more clear next Nov, either way I wanna be prepared.

Going for Thanksgiving too is an added extra ;)

Just hoping all this time that the dollar depreciates from its present high value.
