Is Vista Cracked?

White hat hackers have apparently hacked Microsoft's Patchguard - a new way to prevent rootkits from occurring in Windows Vista, or stopping unauthorised software from modifying the Windows Kernel. Should these hackers be allowed to compromise someone else's intellectual property in the pursuit of raising security issues? Feel free to comment on the article below...

white hackers do things like hack websites then tell the owner how they got in and how to patch it. "good hackers"

Black hackers hack into things to alter/destroy/steal that sort of thing...

i as always stick by the saying "if it was designed by humans, humans can undesign it"

...actually i just made that up, back to my beer!

You may have just made it up but it is exactly what I have always felt though I phrase it "If man can make it man can break it"

I like the concept of White Hat Hackers, in fact I think they are vital.

Without them then companies like Micro$$ might be tempted to be less than truthfull about thier products :nono:

The only thing that I know of that has been secured quite well is online gaming, now most games are secure so they will only play a game online if your the only person using that cd key.

Also I think Steam is another perfect example of a piece of software that stops you playing online with a cracked game. Although there is ways round Steam, as soon as you try to access a server you wont be let in, good job Valve :beerchug:

There`s a big difference in the checking of codes online and from the software on a cd.

In it`s simplest form, a customers cd will-not contain all the valid codes. i.e. all the codes that are distributed (otherwize they`d all be extracted from the cd and used). The cd will only contain the means as to verify if the code is legitimately generated. Out of each 100 correctly generated codes, only a small percent are used - which is where online checking comes in, in this instance, the online source does have all the distributed, legitimate codes.

(in the same breathe, it`s wholey possible to setup a program to generate codes and check them at 100s a minute and spit out valid ones that give a different response from the server)

If some1 just won the lottery, won a bet on a 50000/1 horse and tripped over a 5 leaf clover, their illegal generated code might work online. However, as the legit code-owner buys their game, and hence complains their code is used, the code is blocked and a new one issued to the legit customer. Same scenario with those bad-boi game shop employees who nick codes out of game boxes.

In this day and age, there is 1 way an online code can be set for 1 user, be unique to that customer, be registered at the manufacturers and be activated by the time the customer gets home to install. A large % of members here could figure this one out. Don`t look forward to that day, but it`s coming.

btw. a cracker is not interested in sorting out codes for people to illegally play a game or source it`s attributes online. The crack is for "fun" and your encouraged to buy the game. The point of trying the crack/rip is so u can see how crap it is b4 u shell out $40.

Fair comments mate..

I dont think your comments are out of line or illegal as you are not talking about how to crack software, just why it is done and how it can be prevented ;)

I do hope Microsoft find a way one day to stop their software from being cracked as the way I see it, you get alot for your money when you buy Windows

I'll say it again, since when did microsoft say they were invincible?

Really pee's me off with all the microsoft hate, the industry would be no where near where we are for now if it wasnt for microsoft. People seem to only ever remember the bad stuff and take for granted the good stuff and never mention it.

I agree that microsoft have made bad decisions in the past, but when you weigh up the amount of decisions they've made, it properly add's up to 0.1% of bad decisions.

Anyways, i dont want to start a war in anyway. Just annoys me when people only see the bad things in other people.

Well said nathan. People moan but who else has produced an OS that can do what Windows does...better?

Nobody, maybe yes they are monopolising, but the OS is decent and you can do pretty much everything you want on it

@Rastalovich: Borderline but it's ok as you encourage people to buy the game - which I believe they should do
