Is this normal temperature

Hi guys,
just yesterday, i started back F@H and found that the cpu temperature raise up to 98*C with stock fan. MY cpu is i5-2500K without any overclock. Is this normal?
And I wanted to change the cpu cooler, any suggestion for a cpu cooler sub USD100 before i go to water cooling? I know one of them is CM hyper212+. too bad my local stores said no stock.
any suggestion are welcome.
thanks in advance.

Er, no, that's not normal. At least, I really wouldn't think so. My friend ran his 3570k through Intel Burn Test on the stock cooler and was maxing out at around 80*C - IBT is far more strenuous than Folding. Either your software isn't picking the temperatures up correctly, or something's wrong with the heatsink/thermal paste etc. Is there an over abundance of dust within the heatsink's fins?
As for a new heatsink: the Noctua NH-D14 is just over your $100 budget, at $104.99, but it is the best air cooler around. If you're going to water cooling soon, though, I'd just try and buy some new thermal paste and stick with your stock cooler for now.

Edit: that being said, I just looked at Malaysia's temperatures and it seems as though you guys are having some pretty damn hot days. That will make your temps go up, of course.
Also, what's your case's airflow like?

thanks for the quick reply.
my case is HAF 912. and how to measure the case's airflow?
yes, there is quite some dust build up in my case especially the mesh.
i'm going to watercool it after september, so maybe worth to change to hyper212?
the temperature is around 23-34*C and the room temperature is around 30*C.
is that going to affect very much?

Have you got intake fans/exhaust fans to get the air moving inside your case?
Try and get a vacuum cleaner and carefully hoover the dust away, as any improved airflow can help. Open your case up and look to see if your CPU cooler is inundated with dust; if so, carefully try to dislodge the dust (a can of pressurised air can be used) and vacuum it up after.
And sure, for it's price the Hyper 212 is a good cooler.
You say you haven't overclocked the CPU at all, but is it still running at stock volts?
Honestly, at that temperature i'm surprised your system didn't crash.

98*C? Wow, thats very hot.

Have you tried applying new thermal paste to the cpu, and resitting the stock cooler/heat sink?

I find that cleaning and thermal paste helps quite a lot to bring temperatures down :)

Get a can of compressed air and give your rig a good clean. Clean off and reapply the thermal paste. Double check if the cooler is mounted properly.

you can purchase a used NH-D14 for $50. 6year warrenty even the CP-14 is a good
cooler. i ve had both and the D14 did edge out with the twin stacks vs the single stack.
but a 5° difference @ 1.49vcore was impressive. the 212 was 8° short. value for money.
as for the heat, you got some bunnies in that heatsink or a defect fan.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice.
I cleaned the dust at the case fan and the mesh. I cleaned the dust at the fan blade of CPU and GPU heatsink. It turn out reduced 2 to 4*C. Maybe I should buy a new TIM to reapply it. Arctic MX4 or Noctua NT-H1, which one better? or no significant difference?
I bought a can of compressed air. turn out i not good at all to use it. A can of compressed air just to blow off the dust at the mesh. then not enough to blow off the dust from the GPU heatsink. and the air is supercool and left a trail of water on the mesh. Is it safe to clean the electronic part? any advice to choose the can compressed air? Or I can use hair dryer as blower?
One more question, what is the difference of 212+ and 212EVO except the price is about $20 difference?
Thanks.

The evo cools better, but only by 2-3 degrees C in the best cases. If you can find them for around the same price, I'd get the Evo, but at retail prices, I'd get the 212+ because it's cheaper.
The MX4 is better, but only by 1 degree C

thanks for the help, guys.
i've checked the price of NH-D14 and 212EVO at my place.
The price of the 212 is half of the NH-D14. Worth it to invest it while waiting for the XSPC Raystorm EX240 WC kit?
Thanks.

Yeh dude go for the 212. I had it before I switched to the NH-D14 and it was a really awesome cooler for the price. You will be watercooling anyway so the 212 will be fine as a temporary solution :D

id try and master the air-colling aspect before moving to water-cooling. so you can get
familiar with the over-clock temps and vcore voltages. water can make you braver than
should be. you'll know the threshold of the chip and what it makes for power vs voltage.

hey guys, i tried to re-apply the thermal paste. still the same, when f@h with the cpu, it rise up to 98*C. though the paste not NH or MX4. at least i think not the paste problem. I might get 212EVO by this weekend and try it out again.
BTW, i agree with you, airdeano. i'll try to master the air-cooling before go to WC.
thanks, guys.

You are probably applying too much thermal paste. You only need a very small amount. A small pea sized amount is more than enough.

hey guys. I just put 212EVO into my rig. the temperature seems like ok.
when i fold with cpu, temp increase from 40C to 64C.
i havent try stress program like prime95 or Intel Burn Test.
just saw a thread posted by Jeff_s510. he uses 212+ and the temp is 60C plus.
i think my temp is also ok.
