Is The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro CPU Cooler Good Enough?

The Orange One

OK, So I am in the process of ordering parts for my new build (and yes - there will be a project log).

The CPU I Will be using is the i7-3770K And i am hoping for an over-clock to around 4.5 GHz.

Will this Cooler (be quiet! Dark Rock Pro Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler) Be good enough to give me that Over-clock, while still Having fairly Decent Temps?

Many Thanks in Advance,
The Orange One.

Yes. Easily at 4.5ghz. You barely even need to raise the voltage to get 4.5ghz.

I can manage it with 1.185v on the vcore. You could manage an overclock like that with a £15 heatsink - some even say you can get it on the stock heatsink, and tbh, if you push more than 4.5ghz then you need loads more volts which isnt really worth it so much.

What motherboard will be using?

I have the same processor with a D14. I cant even get stable at 5ghz. I could get stable at high voltages at 4.8ghz but it's not really worth the extra heat and voltage for 200mhz.

I run at 4.6ghz at 1.24v which is good and temps are always under 70 degrees.

Can I also ask what the rigs gunna be used for?

Fair enough then. It will all work fine. The D14 may do it a little better, but there isnt gunna be much in it anyway. Ivybridge runs pretty cool up to 4.5ghz anyway

Performance - D14. Any day.
Aesthetics - Dark Rock.

It's up to you. At 4.5ghz they will both performa absolutely fine and temperatures wont be an issue. Both will probably hold out fine to around 4.8ghz-5ghz, but chances are you wont be able to even get it stable enough at that, while using voltages you'd be happy with for 24/7 overclock.

On the 3770k you shouldnt really be going past 1.35v for a 24/7 OC. I struggle to get my 3770k stable at that at 4.7ghz. Yet, I can manage 4.6ghz at 1.24v - at which both coolers would be absolutely fine.

The D14 is probably a little quieter too, but if you're going for aesthetics, the bequiet isnt that bad a choice

lol. What are the prices? If the bequiet is more than £10 cheaper than the D14, I'd say get that. is theres only a fiver in it go for the noctua

Dont rate that too much...

Anyone that puts their heatsinks sucking the warm air off the graphics cards in a review doesnt deserve to have his reviews considered :)

Remember it also depends on your chip. James here has been blessed - his chip needs quite a bit less volts than mine to get stable at 4.5GHz, and is a fair bit cooler because of it.
As he's said, the minimal performance increase from 4.5->4.8 is NOT worth the heat. Not with an air cooler, at least.
I'd go with the 'D14 and run at 7v/5v -> then it's inaudible.

I know that, but generally speaking - the chips will be able to hit 4.6ghz at under 1.3v, and 4.7ghz will require over 1.35v. So as you say it is only really worth going to 4.6ghz
