Is the 3820 an unlocked processor

Is the 3820 an unlocked processor or is it just processors with a K at the end

No the 3820 isn't unlocked, you can still overclock it though but I don't think it has an unlocked multiplier. The only unlocked processors on the 2011 socket are the 3930K and the 3960X.

Edit: Some internet searching will help you to find a more in depth explanation of the overclocking potential of the 3820. I have seen reviews where they take it to around 4.7ghz

The multiplayer is semi locked, it is locked to a max of 43 instead of the other Sandy E chips. You can change gear ratio and multiplayer and FSB to get 5Ghz or higher if you have really good cooling though. So if you need X79 but dont want to dish out 500 euro for a cpu its a good chip.

i just wont to a overclock that will be constintily stable alll year not looking to do anything to crazy so should this do the job

what do you want to use the rig for? the performance of the 2600k/2700k or IB 3770k is similar to that of the 3820 unless you need the features of socket 2011 and also works out cheaper overall (motherboard+CPU+RAM)

if it is a lot of video encoding and video work and you need multiple beefy GPU's go with it. If you only plan on running 1 GPU and dont really need all the features of socket 2011 it might be cheaper to get a 2700k after monday since ivy bridge drops on monday so sandy bridge should be at least a bit cheaper and t might work out a lot cheaper over all

its going to be used for gaming and video editing but i render my vids before i go to bed so if the 2700k is better for gaming ill go with that (Dont think the CPU will effect gaming that much).

i wonted to go with 2011 because i read its better then 1155 and also it is more current so im thinking it will be more future prof

i also are going to be running two GPU's

2011 can fill all those shoes but the platform cost alittle more, I think it's worth the extra money.

Have a look at my thread in the overclock section. The 3820 is partially unlocked but I've managed 4.75ghz stable, am working on 4.875ghz stability. Perhaps try 5.0ghz if I get time

The decision here is about how much time your pc will spend making vids. If you are doing it overnight/at work and the vids are taking less than 6 hours to render then you won't need 2011.

Gaming wise you can get away with a bottom of the range AMD 4100 at it will run virtually all modern games at 30fps on stock...
