Is RAM cooling optional?

Hi guys,

Im using an x850xt, soon to have an MP-1 attached to it. :D

My question is, is cooling the memory on the card optional? The stock cooler even cools it so I presume its necessary on the x850s?

I didnt bother on my x850xtpe though i had a pelt on mine which may have helped keep am cool aswell.

I did have a fan blowing across the card during benching though

Suppose I can always buy it later if needed... it will have a 120mm from blowing on to it from the PA160 so hopefully fine...

i dont think its necessary, if you are overclocking heavily some will recommend ramsinks but personally i dont use any on my 7800gt.

I always use sinks after I killed my X800XTPE's RAM by not bothering, I even had a 120mm fan blowing over the card!!.

It saves time and possibly large amounts of money if the RAM does overheat. Isay if the stock cooler cools it, then u shud aswell.

its quite a lot of hassle to put the ramsinks on though. I used them on my old x800 pro and it took a long time to get a mixture of the arctic silver glue mix stuff and as5 and then apply it correctly. They were a bit of a job to get off aswell. Also i couldnt get the dry mixture off the ramsinks using arctic silver cleaning products so it looks like i will need to get a new set for each application :(

But the gluely stuff they use between the stock cooler and the ram is pretty rubbish stuff.

You seem to be doing things the hard way mate. Just use thermal tape it's much easier and comes off again without bringing the IC with it lol.

Attaching ramsinks is essential for stable perfromance and to give todays high performance ram a chance to dissipate lots of heat under many hours of gaming benching.

I learnt that a Radeon 8500 that had a GPU cooler but no ramisnks would overheat after just 10mins of soldier of fortune 2, 2 weeks later it was RMA time.

So I guess the answer is if you want it to last then yes it's exactly what you need.

I agree with boardy technology allows us to use thermal tape to simply stick the ramsinks to the BGA ram. When it's time to revert back to original cooler they simply peel off and can be re-used.

Simple.

thanks for the tip, i was told before that the tape wasnt the best to conduct the heat and therefore went for the mixture of arctic silver products.

I have always seen decent RAMsinks as an investment, you can reuse again and again so it's worth it, i can always find things to cool with them.

I personally use the AS5 + Arctic Epoxy, never had a problem getting them off again, i just figure if i'm spending money on decent ramsinks i might as well get some decent thermal transfer to them, if i used tape i would just make some ramsinks by cutting up an old aluminium heatsink (cheap and effective).
