Is my onboard LAN dead?

I can't seem to get an Internet connection working. I've tried repairing the connection under Windows XP, but it still doesn't work. It says that the network didn't assign an IP address. My IP is some 169.254 number. I've also reinstalled the drivers, and still nothing. My NIC is dead, or Dell's OEM disc is the problem.

go to command prompt and type ipconfig/release then type ipconfig/renew and see if that helps since its pulling an ip I doubt its dead seems like a bad ip but not 100% otherwise try calling tech support for ur service and see if they can talk ya thru it.

also sometimes resetting the modem and rebooting comp helps

I guess I got my answer: It doesn't matter! The board refuses to POST. I've learned my lesson on motherboards: You get what you pay for. Edit: Was an issue w/ the CMOS battery. POSTs now, but no internet still. I tried ipcong thing and nada. It says that there is a problem w/ the Ethernet Controller.

Edit #2: Needed to connect router for it to assign a valid IP Address. Wierd.
