Internet Explorer 6 Acting Strange Using fn/alt

I have a mini keyboard, and when I try to use alt codes for special characters, the browser usually does a 'page back' (like i hit the left green arrow) or something else like a website (homepage, for example), depending on what numerical sequence I input. It worked fine on my last computer, just pressed 'fn' and 'alt' simultaneously and then the numerical keypad number(s), and got a special character. I just reinstalled WinXP on my pc, switched from an AMD to an Intel cpu/mobo, formatted my old hdd's, and now this... It's not a total bummer, but enough of one because I like to use alt characters. I get the idea its a browser setting, but I can't see anything in Tools/Internet Options/General-Advanced that looks might it might be the culprit. Maybe a windows update, or something in the device manager/services, I don't know... sounds strange, just wanting to know if someone has had this problem and what the solution is.

Thanks, TJS

llwyd is the winner!! Unfortunately, I just figured it out a few hours ago. Noticed my number lock wasn't on, went into the BIOS and found it was disabled, have no idea why... (I feel kinda stupid for not checking it before)

Believe it or not I posed this same question on another forum a few days ago, you would not believe the incredibly stupid answers and counter questions I got... I blew my top. Nice to know there's someone who can read a question and make an informed response! And I'm not ragging on you, XMS, that was an acceptable question to get a better idea of my problem. As it is, we all forget to check the simple solution on occasion, thinking something else is the matter. I'm a communications specialist in the Army, and where radios are concerned I'm usually pretty quick to find the fault. Computers... they are quite a bit more of a hand-full. ;]

For a little bit of executive fun with the IE, hold down control and scroll the mouse wheel up & down..

.. hours of squirly entertainment.

I don't know if I should do this, I get the idea my computer screen will turn into a clock running down from 10 seconds and then my computer blows up...
