Intel xeon

after your views on the Intel Xeon X5550 cpu for home server use, is it good enough?

been offered two cpu's and a dual cpu motherboard for £60, a friend of mine said they came from an old school or college that was being redone (i dont remember which one he said as i was not listening that much as to where they came from)

my planned use was to use for a home server which will be used for plex, file storage and maybe used to host images for forum use to start with, looking to run freenas on it also.

I only have an overclocked i3 in mine and it runs without a hitch.

Its quite old though but is super cheap. Id make sure you dont need ECC memory because if it gets to that point it may not be worth spending on.

Isn't ECC ram pretty cheap though? Seems to be £60 to £80 for a 32GB DDR3 kit.

yes by the looks of it it does use ECC memory.

found Samsung 8GB PC3-10600R Memory for £20.70 so i guess it depends on how much i would be looking at running to make things smooth as to if its a good idea or not

It's going to use a lot of power, double the cooling and etc. IDK if it is worth it or not. You could probably run a server quite happily on one of those CPUs.

Have a look at the passmark you need. On the Plex website they recommend a passmark of 2000 for each stream you are transcoding, and you need a little headroom above that to keep things ticking along nicely.

So for instance an i3 7100 has a passmark somewhere in the region of 5,800 - enough for 2 transcoded streams and plenty of headroom. If you're not running any VM's then 4gb is enough, single stick would be fine, dual channel makes little difference for a server.

thanks for the info guys

i think i need to look at building an i3 or i5 system rather than running the dual Xeon's. seeing as the passmark score for the dual X5550 is 9054 and the new i3 8350k is 9184. yes its going to cost a little more to build a new i3 system but id hope it would last longer and also as someone said above a new cpu is going to use less power.

any help on hardware for the build would be great as i dont have a lot of free time to look around at the moment and ive not had time to keep up with all the new hardware :(

wait for the new Ryzen APUs. The £99 one will probably be more than fast enough fella.

ahh is it due out soon is it? whats the cooling like on the new AMD stuff? i really want to fit it in a rack mount case so i can put it with all the other network stuff and have it out the way

Their stock cooling is very good. More than good enough. What size (in units) rack are you going to use? the case I mean?

id like to keep it as small as i can but i guess id be looking at a 2U size rackmount case at least to give enough head room for cpu cooler.

The AMD 2200G which is due out on 12th Feb will be 65w I think, won't be too hot for 2U provided you've got some airflow. But it might be worth having a look at the Intel i3 at that point, as they may have to reduce the price to make it more competitive.
