Intel vs Amd Build

Sorry about the influx of threads and constant questions, but I would rather get to know as much as I can before I lay out my hard earned cash on a new system.

My latest annoyance is now between building a Intel or AMD based system since I've been convinced that they have gotten a lot better since my first and so far last AMD. Now I've just got to shake my AMD bug and maybe bite the AMD bullet...or just stay on the Intel road.

Now so far the Details I have on the systems are -

Intel Based

Intel E8400 3.0Ghz CPU - $239

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P - $189

Corsair 2 x 2GB 800Mhz -$73

Total - $501

AMD Based

AMD PhenomII 720 TripleCore 2.8Ghz CPU -$192

Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4 -$173

Corsair 2 x 2GB 800Mhz -$73

Total - $438

Now so far the AMD has only got the price in my mind coming in at $63 cheaper, But...what will be the better system?

Everything else in the system will stay the same for now, with a 600W PSU powering everything and a EN9800GT making sure everything is pretty.

Any help on this new set of questions will be great.

you know what my point of view on this already AMD is defo my choice

LGA 775 seems too be on the edge of dieing now

as soon as the i5 hits you wont see many LGA 775 things being produced

and with AM3 you can be sure your future proof

Having brought MrsVB a 7750BE with that Gigabyte mobo and the RAM, I can heartily recommend it.

That mobo is insane for the money, and the processor does 3GHZ without blinking. It's insanely fast for the money.

So AMD, without question.

Unless you're going to take advantage of the E8400's flair for overclocking and also push it for all it's worth (i.e.- Over 4.0GHz) and also don't care for future CPU upgrades, then it's Socket AM2+/AM3 without a doubt.

If I may ask, how much more is the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition where you live? Over here the difference is just £30 and personally I would say that it's worth the extra money.Excellent choice of motherboard as well.

If you have any money left over, I would get an aftermarket CPU cooler as well as the stock cooler is a bit mediocre, particularly with the 720 Black.

I'd go down the AMD route. That'll be a very nice system and with the saved cash you could go for a new GPU in the future. The GPU is more a market where the extra £50 gets you a much better unit, whereas if that £50 extra is spent on the CPU and motherboard you'll barely be able to tell the difference.

not really to worried about HUGE Ocing, just the mild stuff, and dont plan on upgrading the CPU for a very very long time.

They do have a Phenom 9950 Quad-Core Black Ed. AM2+ CPU for $208

Frankly I wouldn't bother with a Phenom 9000 series processor as they struggled to keep up with Intel's offerings. Get the Phenom II X3 720 black and if you wish to use the money saved, ali james' idea of a faster graphics card instead is a very good proposition.

Thinking about buying a GA-770-UD3 instead of the GA-790X-UD4, mainly based on not wanting to ever go SLI (the 770 only has one PCIe 2.0 slot) and the fact that it is al but the same other than no SLI and no onboard Graphics chipset...along with only being $125 instead of $173

Brining my total build doing to $390...leaving heaps of change for a nice new video card.

Thinking about dropping the 720 Triple core for the AMD 550 Dual Core...any suggestions on the swap guys?

Also sorry about the double post

I personally didn't find my old X3 720 Black's third core being used effectively by most games. The Phenom II X2 550 is often a little quicker out of the box in some games and the success rate of unlocking these to Quad Cores are actually quite decent. I see no harm in dropping down to a Dualie. If you do so however, make sure that the motherboard that you choose uses the SB710 or SB750 southbridge. :)

Lame...Heres the list then

Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H Motherboard $116.00

AMD PHENOM II 550, Black Edition $143.00

Corsair (2x XMS2 2GB) 800MHz $67.00

Total:$326.00

The processor is AM3 and the mobo is AM2+. It'll work but I'd be more inclined to go for a Tri-core or something and get a AM3 mobo. Then you can always upgrade to the next processor or DDR3 or whatever.

Whereas a great processor in a budget motherboard means you would need to change your mobo and your RAM to upgrade.

Just my 2c.

Still a great system for the money though.

Not really after DDR3 ATM, and by the time I upgrade next there will either be DDR5 or flying super computers that can think for me.

As long as you aren't gonna be doing anything too extreme (high-performance gaming) it should be a good switch. The Triple-Cores are like dual-cores with only a slight increase in performance due to the tri-core pinch.
