Intel to up 45nm Core 2 Extreme prices by 50% next year

WTF?!?! That could push them over £1k depending on what shop you go to!!

I for one am not spending that sorta money on a CPU, I could buy another HD projector for that!!!!

Qoute - "That's the price point Intel has maintained for the Extreme line of gaming processors since the family was introduced back in the Pentium D days."

Does that mean that the old Northwood Extreme's weren't actually Extreme Editions then? Either that site is wrong or I paid a premium for a 3.4EE Northy that wasn't all it said it was on the tin lol.

Overclocking will go back to its original point then! OC mid-range to high-end clockspeeds.

Theres already around £300 between the QX and the model down- thats 266MHz or 333MHz. How can they justify charging 50% more for that, unless theres to be a bigger clockspeed gap?

With x.5 multis coming in, its possible there will only be 166MHz difference :p

I hope Intel have something very special lined up for the price difference

like a solid silver heatsink as standard.... for £1k i want my EE cpu delivered by a pair of wenches too.

Don't forget that Intel this year recorded a record $1.86bn profit too - so it's hard to understand where the justification lies especially as a reduction to 45nm has associated cost savings.

Having said that, if the competition were closer in it's own performance to that of Intel then the ensuing price war would ensure consumer prices are at least competitive.

The "AMD arent performing" has been offered up by a fair few folk, especially at XS.

2 things from me:

1/ I hope the fanbois (of which there are thankfully none of here) are ****ing happy- this is what happens when the market is so unbalanced

2/Dont blame AMD solely- no-one forced Intel to be greedy.

Apparently demand for Barca (on the server side anyway) is huge- AMD have no trouble shifting the CPUs at all, despite the ****-poor board support!

I agree mav- with record profits, its a bit crap of Intel to feel that they "have to" increase prices. I was moaning about the supermarket equivalent yesterday!

Well personally I'm gonna wait for SkullTrail to come along and see what happens to CPU prices then.

I think that may just force them to come down a bit especially due to the fact that Intel will be selling double the amount if SkullTrail takes off.

Not to the same extent though...

AMD never announced record profits then increased the price by 50% :p

Prices IIRC did go up, but not by anything like as much
