Intel Core i7 7820X Skylake X Review

Haha not to worry, i slammed a 6800k in my rig, its running at 4ghz on 1.2v and doesnt even reach 70 degrees on a single tower noctua cooler whilst being silent in this current weather, like upgrading now would be shooting myself in the foot :D

That is impressive with the tropical temps we've been having!

Linustechtips had a i9 7900X-

When OC to 4.5Ghz and under load, the temp went up to 90C! I'm no expert, but it's clear that the lack of soldering has impacted the temps. I not going to get a CPU that runs at those temps.

PCPER had the same clocks but at 83C @ 1.24v, so...? Depends on the voltage obviously (which Linus doesn't mention I think?)

LTT has not been the best source of information for a long time really. They make good tech related entertainment though, but sadly they are not nearly as technical as i would hope.

Lack of soldering effects the temps without a doubt and the decision to substitute soldering for toothpaste was a disappointing one, but at least we can still delid. Intel could have done better though, no doubt about that.

Linus doesn't mention it at all, and seriously a 9 minute video?? his rant was longer haha!

Having said all that, i think this 8 core cpu isn't that great, it is double the price of a Ryzen 1700, yes it is faster but it also uses 75 more watt stock for stock and i just have a hard time swallowing that price difference, if it was MUCH MUCH faster then maybe it would be worth considering only if you are constantly rendering on the thing and want to save as much time as possible within a budget of say, 1000 dollars.

I'm definitely curious what this news bomb is regarding Coffee Lake.

The 7820K performs where I expect it to. It's a shame the temperatures are so high though.

Tom, I have watched the video (twice actually):

Tablet vs paper: Tablet for sure :D

Rant: Completely understandable and I have great respect for your remaining so calm on camera despite it all. A disgusting move by Intel and I genuinely feel for you and other honest reviewers that got the finger.

For what it's worth; I am still interested in reading and watching any other processor you will review later on.

The processor: Nice performance, good review, wattage and temps insanely high.

The from my homeland Guru3D said: Here in the EU Intel killed all marketing, press and PR activities. Hence the majority of media all over Europe is not receiving any information from Intel anymore, that’s the same samples wise. So the review you see today is courtesy of a board-partner as Intel does not seed these processor samples for review anymore - but apparently all media in the USA are seeded. We have no clue what is going on with Intel these days. The Intel supported reviews this week are based on a handful cherry-picked websites that are on a marketing-drip directly from Intel. The rest of the media will need to somehow borrow their samples from Intel partners.

It has been and still is a complete and utter mess with Intel, I can honestly say that as for this entire X299 / Core X series release Intel has not send any info or samples. Our hails through emails are not responded to, and the phone-numbers we dial of contacts are not answered. Here in the EU Intel has killed (with a few exceptions) marketing, press and PR activities. Hence 98% media all over Europe is not receiving any information from Intel anymore.

There's no way I'm going to delid a CPU, especially ones that cost this much money. Might as well wait for the next generation of CPUs that are properly manufactured, which is probably next year or the year after. It might also send a message to intel, if sales goes down because of this.

I am not a fan boy of any product. As long as it does what I want and it just works I am happy. Was looking forward to seeing the new intel processors and boards, but alas will be saving my money and waiting for thread ripper. 16 Cores and 32 Threads for a lot less money than intel and more PCI-E lanes. What is not to like. It is refreshing to see AMD back again. For me over the last few years intel have just rehashed the same old stuff simply because there was no competition from anyone else. I still have and use an i7 2600K from 2011 in one of my computers and it just does what I want it to do. Can not wait for your thread ripper reviews. If you are currently using a Socket 2011-3 Broadwell E cpu can not see any reason at the moment as to why you would want to upgrade. Wish intel would start to innovate and bring something new instead of just the same old same old!!! Really starting to think that this was a rushed release.

Well i'm looking forward to Coffee Lake-S :D I'm just a gamer.
Gamers Nexus shows that for a streamer its far better to get a capture mashine, than streaming from the gamer rig. Even with a 7900X

I'm obsessed now and need to know what the deal is with CFL-S :( I honestly have a problem with ambiguity where I can't help but wonder about it. Honest truth.

Intel has got to release an epic hyperthreading 12MB L3 Coffee Lake-S for us gamers. The hypothetical problem with that is that on paper it completely undermines the 7800X? Despite my being worried that the lineup may launch without hyperthreading, I'm pretty sure that such a part leaked recently?

Is the bomb needing a new chipset? Which we already know. Argh it's killing me!

Edit: there we are:

Intel’s 6C/12T Coffee Lake Specs Leaked – 4.2GHz Clock Speed, 81W TDP

Surely the TDP is 95W?

I am really sorry Tom for things turning out as they did. You are trying to have great relationship with all of them, and your word is worth more that signing any NDA. Too bad they all don't respect that. As for the CL bomb it is best for you to decide. If it will make some difference in the future intel's behaviour yea, throw it. I have noticed that you try to attract more audience, which is good, all that you do costs a lot of coins, more audience, more money, more content. I think i speak for all when i say you will always have the OC3D crew on the forums with you. It doesn't pay all the bills, but other terms it is way more than others have.

Thanks for another great review and honest opinion. Your friendly advice is everything one need for making decision about new purchase. :)

I know this is a long shot Tom and you've said no in the past, but I would gladly become a patron if you made one. You shouldn't have to spend money to do reviews because certain companies don't care or are to scared of your honest opinion. If my money can help you buy the items you want to review and allow you to feel more secure because you don't have to suck up to anybody, then by all means you can get my donations every month.

In regards to paper vs tablet, I probably would choose tablet so you can save money on your ink and on paper. Just use the tablet for yourself and continue to put the graphs on screen.

Thankyou Tom for making yet another informative video It's such a shame Intel screwed you the way they did BUT it just seems to be the way they are doing business ATM and then they wonder why all the hatred and negativity is coming their way, but that's what happens when you become arrogant I suppose.
TBH I don't think I could have been as restrained as you were considering it's actually impacting your income so full kudos to you on that front.

And I really agree with NBD I think it's past time you swallowed a bit of your pride and open a patreon account so that those of us who want to help provide a little bit extra can do so, It's not to make you feel bad or beg it's because we LOVE what you do and we want to help what you do when we can that's all.
Keep up the great work all at OC3D do!

Agreed.

@Tom: Set yourself a goal, to keep you up an running(not publicly), and any money above that, use that to upgrade the channel. For instance Camera, Lighting and so on. In that way, you don't have to feel bad about it :D

I did some rough price comparisons here in Straya and the 7900x is $1449 and the boards are $420-$850 and that's not even the top of the range stuff yet mostly.
Yet a 1700x/1800x is $439-$679 with boards $109-$439 so we are talking about a MASSIVE disparity in price for lets face it 2 more cores than the AMD chips at DOUBLE the price with higher heat and power draw WTF are Intel on crack or what and then when Threadripper does come out Intel are pretty much going to be dead in the water unless they reduce their prices massively

THIS. Barnes Wallis would expect no less.

Yes for sure a Patreon would get a lot of support. I know the US/North American culture is more gimme gimme gimme and that is at odds with the Anglocentric stiff upper lip, mums the word ethos but Tom you do have a business to run. I'd rather shoot you a tenner once a month than some Instagram babe..

I looked at the i9 and I was like what the? $1449!! I don't stream or render so I'm quite happily running my old 7700k.

I'm glad the performance is there at least in the new chips. Without Ryzen I think they would have charged the same for much less performance.

I think it's going to be a waiting game. If threadripper is awesome, Intel will have to lower the prices.

You need to guess at threadripper's performance? it's Ryzen.

Now whether it will clock to the 4ghz wall? that is the only unknown for me atm. Even without that though it's pretty easy to assume the performance using some simple maths.
