The new Intel CPUs are upon us, and we take the 8-Core i7-7820X out for a spin and see what she is capable of.

Damn, doubling the wattage for that overclock? Guess I'll stick with stock, with that power usage you might as well be mining.

Only had a little time to read the last two paragraphs of the conclusion which precisely answered my question because I was eyeing the 7820X for a gaming rig. Muchos gracias for saving me valuable beer tokens; 6C/12T Coffee Lake-S it is then!

Id hold fire on that for a bit.... Im debating weather or not I drop a bomb about CL

I can only answer yes to that :D I'm itching to get hyperthreading back along with at least 2 more cores and 4.5-4.8GHz frequencies for my next gaming rig that must hold me over until Ice Lake/Tiger Lake. Please Tom, tell us :D Is it no HT 6C part?

Drop the bomb.

Intel have been getting away with too much lately where people don't speak up.

Haswell-E was the worst POS I have even seen when it launched and the problems hardly got a mention from tech sites.

sorry for my wrong en.

the last paragraph is why i love overclock3d! wish everywhere was like this.
very good and helpful review.
thank you.

Drop bomb TTL. Lots of us waiting for Coffeelake.

^ This. I'd rather know now where I stand regarding the purchase I'm after than waiting excitedly and be sorely disappointed upon release.

Welcome to the forums! Yeah, 1st site I go to for reviews for anything.

What is Intel playing at, no NDAs to sign? It's almost as if they want the media to drop the bombs and leak this forward.. seems like a lot of smoke and mirrors are they lining stuff up behind the scenes? are they running around like headless chickens scared of AMD (Doubt it) just what is Intels issue.. where is the "Hype"

It's a fail Intel, no Hype, no sale... come on fellas!

Drop that bomb, intel certainly dropped their standards and letting this whole thing happen, time to shake things up and go ham on them Tom.

if youre here to see if you need to buy the 7820X or for that matter any X299 as the basis for your gaming system we have one thing to say to you. Don't. In the grand scheme of things you either want to go and grab a Z270 /7700K based system or if you want a few more cores for occasional rendering and streaming then just go buy the Ryzen 1700.
What if i don't want to compromise neither single nor multithread performance? 7820X seems like it can have the best of both worlds - your sample reached 5GHz (but was limited by thermals, which is a a solvable issue) and it still has the excess threads available when needed. It's not terribly expensive either, with proper custom loop cooling this might be the answer to my needs.

So you had to buy the CPU for review because Intel decided to tar every reviewer with the same brush because some one dared stand up to them?

They're really not helping themselves right now, are they?

Ryzen 1700 here I come !

And thanks, Tom. Especially for paying to show me why I should go Ryzen. Much appreciated.

Hello fellow countryman :D I'm beginning to worry that for 6C/12T we need to buy a 7800X (~390 Euro for us)...

Haha not to worry, i slammed a 6800k in my rig, its running at 4ghz on 1.2v and doesnt even reach 70 degrees on a single tower noctua cooler whilst being silent in this current weather, like upgrading now would be shooting myself in the foot :D
