Intel/AMD propaganda

This is NOT an excuse for a flame war. Please dont go off at tangents about the quality of either companies products, try and keep the conversation focussed, but general..you`ll see what I mean by that.

I`ve not been into computing for the longest time, but from what I can remember, I`ve never seen so much propaganda- not so much for the current gear (available or soon to be released) but for whats coming next.

It feels like both Intel and AMD are releasing tons of appealing tid-bits to keep us interested in whats coming next. Is this to put us off the competitors current offerings, or showing that they have no faith in what they have?

Why should we upgrade if both companies are showing how great the next stuff will be? They both seem to be pushing to have the next great stuff out in 6 months, and that doesnt seem to be a speedbump- its more new architecture. Fair enough, AMD are due new architecture, and Intel are about to bring out theirs, so..what are we supposed to do? switch companies and rigs every 6 months? Thats a bigger jump than new GPUs every 6-7 months...

so...which way to turn, who to believe and when to jump?

I think the speed and cost of pc evolution is quite scary now,and at times quite bewildering too.For me,as you all know,intel clicks with me in a way that amd doesn't,so that is what i choose to run.I am an individual and i will run what i prefer not what everyone else is using,as i believe you can only bench/compete with what you have against like for like.

We as benchers (especially here in uk) seldom have access to the latest es hardware that many top benchers have,therefore trying to be top of the orb can be a very costly and futile exercise.I am content to try to be top of my particular cpu/gfx combination.

I think the the real problem is ourselves,we,the hardcore benching community,have something within ourselves that drives us to spend rediculous amounts of money (that we often can't afford) and go to extrordinary lengths and take huge risks,all in pursuit of a pointless,fruitless goal.It surely is a crazy hobby/passion.

From my personal perspective in the last year alone,i have bought 3.2E,520,560,630,660,670,940,2600es,pc800e,dfi 875pt,abit as8,p5wd2-p,aopen i975xa-ydg,x850 agp,x850 pci-e,x1800xt m+s,x1900xl,x1900xt and all the various psu,cooling,ram upgrade needed to suit.All these were incremental upgrades and i lost money on every item,usually within a few weeks of purchase.Thats not to mention the thousands i have spent on phase coolers,accessories and setting up to do my own phase stuff.

Anyone know where my local B.A. (benchers anonymous) group is ?

I feel your pain Thicky - I spent thousands on top end kit before I started this company - now I barely have the time to enjoy it, so I am using a laptop (albeit top spec) and a lowly AMD 3000 air rig for day to day stuff. When you actually sit down and think about it, it is really scary. You devote your life to a thankless task. That's partly why I formed EP-UK, so that it was more worthwhile in my eyes. Plus the fact I get a kick out of helping people.

Maybe thats WHY we push our gear so hard...to get some scraps of respect and justify the money that way? We`re also more "dangerous" with a computer because we know how to get the best out of gear. We can also see past most of the propaganda that companies put up, and could build a top of the range computer for a fraction of the cost if we wanted... I guess the everyday use of this is limited, except to impress normal computer users, or maybe companies??

I've spent thousands on PC hardware over the last year its scary to think about. My friends don't understand it at all but I think it's each to there own.

Benching is very much like an adiction, you get near that score you want or need, and you think "I can get that bit more", then it all goes wrong so you spend hours trying to figure out why. I think that we just have that thing inside which says, I can do that but I can do it better.

I often get asked why I do what I do with PC's by friends and neighbours, as Thicky found out last week. My answer to them when they ask why I do it is very basic and simple, "Because I can". It's a simple fact that we do what we do because we can, theres no real answer as to why. You could ask any bencher why they bench and I can bet that they will stand there for a minute trying to think of a reason, and come out with either "I don't know actually" or "Because I can".

EP-UK has been my home for benching since the day it went live, it always will be my home forum because of the like minded people here. You go on XS or EOC and they have world leaders bigging themselves up, and you have to try really hard to get noticed on any of those. Here you post a good score and people say "Well done mate, lets see more" or something like that. It's the UK benching scene, and it's our scene!

I have spent thousands over the last couple of years since joining this great forum and that's mostly cooling and CPU related stuff, I'd hate to think how much it would have been with so much change in the graphics arena.

It's sooo easy to become obsessive about the getting the last drop of performance out of your kit and whilst it does make logical sense to spend so much time on it, it is something your driven by and that's what life is about i.e. being passionate about things - even PCs. I have been good over the last few months and not bought a single processor and I think the cold-bugged FX60s help dampen the enthusiasm, but now I feel the new Conroe calling to me. Maybe it's the excitement over those incredible superPi scores but it makes me feel my kit is an ancient technology and irrespective of AMD/Intel bias this sort of performance improvement cannot be ignored. If it's all true I won't be able to hold out for long, Chilly1, Conroe, new everything - looks like the kids are gonna have to forget about Christmas presents this year lol

Before I began reading up on the extreme overclcoking community I kind of thought you guys were a bit silly, Most of you defeat the object of overclcoking – Getting performance for free.

But now I can see your point of view, you want the best Possible performace, sometimes no matter what the cost

I'm not a benchaholic, but that could change with my upand coming Intel settup and a Mach 2 :B

PAH!!! Back to my original post... yet more (Sorry..gotta make it specific.. Intel this time..no doubt AMD will say something new to counter it) propaganda on whats coming up next...

Quad core in Q1 next year? Whats the point of Conroe if it`ll be totally obsolete in 6 months?

Are we all drug addicts? Do we need to have a hit of new gear every 6 months? Why cant companies milk a design properly? Let the design mature.. let the silicon process improve, give us speed bumps every few months, and give us new architecture etc WHEN the design process is ready for it!

Despite the absolute hatred between Intel and AMD, they do talk to each other..i`m sure they could agree to not trounce the other company completely and keep things moving, just not so fast

The only possible saving grace is that Intel say Kentsfield will work with any R11 VRM revision mobo... place bets now on that changing I cant see how a quad-core will work in existing mobos, but then i`m not a designer.
