Intel 8th Generation desktop CPU packaging confirms 300-series chipset requirement

I mean this doesn't mean AMD won't have a newer chipset or that board companies won't be releasing refreshed boards(which is probably a good thing for Ryzen honestly) to go alongside the next Zen CPUs. But just doesn't mean you need to upgrade.

Oh I fully expect new boards like the Crosshair Extreme etc... but I like the fact that IF we choose to we can keep an AM4 mobo and drop Zen+ and Zen 2 into it, I will probably change out the mobo though down the line as I would actually like something a bit less budgety looking than the Crosshair Hero.

If AMD can get Bristol Ridge, a completely different technology to Ryzen, working in their AM4 boards then Intel could do the same. This is just total greed and BS and the loyal fans are all lined up with their tubs of butter.

Don't get it. Just totally don't get it. Must be like "Bashed wife syndrome"

*whack whack whack* but he loves me really ^_^

Kind of makes me wish I had just stuck with my FX-8350 for another 2 years rather than jumping ship to an i7-6700k. Were that the case, I'd have just upgraded to a Ryzen 5 1600X by now.

I can't really justify changing from a 6700k though since all I do is game on my main machine.

The 8350 was a good chip, Friend of mine plays at 3440x1440 and recently swapped out for an i7 7820K 8 core and he said in most instances his performance jump in most games hasn't actually improved as much as he thought it would, Although that is due to that res being more GPU dependant but still.

I get the Ryzen recommendation but Vega 56?

Why? It matches 1070 in performance, sure, but is more expensive, unavailable and hogs power.

Well I thought you may already have a freesync display so it made perfect sense to me but if i'm mistaken the so be it and they don't use more power unless you clock the snot out of them and they are releasing soon

There is no i7 7820K, only 7820HK which is a Mobile one and then 7820X.

Yep, Meant X, Intel have too many H's, Q's and K's ^_^

And just like the real battered wife syndrome it's very sad. People literally think AMD will burn their houses down or something, such is the mindshare.

Yep, On OC3D's Facebook some beaten wife said Ryzen runs at a minimum of 80'c and uses on its own around 200 watts, I corrected him with a screenshot of my 1800X running at 45'c ingame with a total system wattage of 300watts running a single 1080 Ti, But he quickly started swearing at me and accusing me of various things.

Bunch of nutjobs, Unable to be reasoned with or educated.

Well I don't like AMD CPU's so for me Intel is the only choice. I am very picky and loyal to only certain brands. ( Western Digital, Asus mobos, Corsair/Seasonic PSU )

Well they aint loyal to you, Brands will screw you over faster than you can say "new socket".

Brand loyalty in this game isn't smart. You should just buy whatever meets your requirements and budget without worrying about what badge something has slapped on it, especially with PSUs where there are some Fractal, XFX, NZXT, Antec etc units that are just rebadged/rehoused Seasonic power supplies.

There's nothing wrong with AMD CPUs and they've at least offered the reassurance that their next generation of Ryzen will work with existing AM4 boards bringing down the cost of any future upgrade.

How is a CPU not a CPU? I don't get your logic

I can understand brand loyalty on "dumb items" (IE things that make other things work, like a motherboard for example) as they come with build quality. But CPUs are all the same. Well, apart from all of the unlocked Intels that lack the instructions to do silly things like run certain VMs and so on (yes I am being sarcastic...)

LOL!!!! Yes that is quite true. They couldn't give two squats about the consumers. I go by experience and over 40 years in the field. The brands that have not screwed me over....wins. That is just the way I work and nothing is going to change that. ;)

Great points and I congratulate AMD for that.

err.....its your logic that doesn't make sense there. I never said a CPU is not a CPU. care to point out where you do not understand?

Anyways guys this is getting off topic. The topic here is that Intel is changing sockets...yet AGAIN. Business wise its an excellent move as it generates more sales....however for the consumer it just really....REALLY...REALLY.....sucks.

I for one am not complaining. I been waiting for an upgrade worth my money since the 4970K. This works for me. If you got deep pockets, this is no issue. If not, cut the crap. You guys are complaining like you have money to prebuy the crap out of it only the extra 250(ish) for a decent motherboard brakes your budget? Bullcrap. If the new motherboards can hold for another 3gen then they are doing a great job. I'll upgrade then too.

I have no words to describe how ridiculous your comment is...

Telling someone with autism that their logic doesn't make sense is like telling a fat bloke he's skinny.

Great points and I congratulate AMD for that.

There there. They love you really. They must, they keep releasing new CPUs for you at least once a year with a new board for you to buy.

In a market without competition, sure. But that's no longer the case. People can now choose to switch to AMD if they want to upgrade their CPU and motherboard. If Intel had kept the same socket it would have been cheaper to upgrade to 8th gen and that alone would make it more attractive.

No real issue for me, i've never been the type to upgrade every one or two gens, I would need a new mobo regardless, i'm gonna be moving from a 2500k. :D

I've waited a good while, I remember saying to myself as soon as skylake rolls around i'm going to upgrade, then the same with kabylake, now coffeelake there's an actual decent jump in the CPUs it seems. Won't know for sure until they're tested though.

Who am I kidding maybe my PC will hold out until Tiger Lake... :p
