Intel 3930K or 4770K?

Quick question for Tom, based on what you have seen with overclocking and temps, would you recommend a 3930K or 4770K?

Depends on what you do on your PC. If it's for gaming then you would be better off with the 4470K, but even then if it's just for gaming the 4670k is more than enough.

If you do things on your PC that requires a lot of horse power like video rendering and the likes then the 3930k would be best.

im gaming mostly with a little holiday photo and video editing.

unsure about overclock speeds and temps on the 4770k. It looks like it gets very hot compared to the 3930K! the idle temps look hot too.

Well..that's a tough one aha!, But really..the 4770k , will probably suit all needs, an 4670k, is fine for gaming (i5) and the i7 really..should be borderline fine for video editing, if your not high quality rendering.

Boycott Intel. If you are gaming get a FX 8320/50. Intel are wiping the gaming core on there bums atm.

Also the FX does out perform the Intel mainstream ivy stuff in modern titles.

For gaming, get the i5 4670K and put the extra $100 towards a better GPU. The Hyper Threading doesn't help in gaming and the 4670K will shred thru multi threaded apps just fine.

And yet another discussion about i5 against i7.....
I am gaming on 2500k @ 4,2 and this is what i also do at my pc:
Recording every single minute of gameplay with dxtory.
editing a lot of it and upload it on youtube...

I have never ever felt my i5 is not enough for the rendering i do, which is upscaling a 1920x1080 video to 2048x1152 in order go get "original" quality on youtube. And also the recording works just fine.

If he is not editing and rendering two hours of video every single day an i5 will be absolutely fine. I can understand the whole i7 so i am future proof stuff but why would you even think about buying a 3930k ?

Gotta agree with that. If we all just used the components we "needed", we wouldnt have half the stuff we do shoved in our cases.

lol ill see how the prices compare too. i might be able to get a 2nd hand 3930k for a similar price to the 4770k.

fair enough, but does that mean that everyone asking a question here is automatically assumed to sit on a shitload of money and be a hardcore enthusiast ?

If I could I would. If I had so much money that I could run quad Titan with the best CPU and the best custom loops, I would and all I would do is still play BF3, watch movies and browse the web.

Yeah me as well, maybe. Like if i would win a million dollars.
But i am talking about the average person. Who is not able to spend 1000 € each year on hardware.

I am just trying to save you some money and maybe get some ppl to start thinkoing about what they recommend to buy. In almost every test i have seen the 4770k oc to 4,3-4,5 BEATS the 3930k or is very very close. There is really no poing of buying the 3930k anymore. Same with the Titan, better get a 780 and save some money. And the huge advantage is a much cheaper chip itself and a cheaper mobo plus a lower power bill at the end of the year.

Yeah I totally know what you mean, I have a friend who has a single monitor 1920 x 1080, I told him a Titan would be a waste, the 780 would do just as well but I still could not persuade him friend to buy the 780 instead, same goes when he was buying an Ivy CPU, he got the 3770k instead of 3570k, then has to disable HT sometimes

In some modern titles, if you are running other programs in the background.

An i5 is still the best choice for general gaming.
