I'm switching teams.

Oh just that? Did I not see somewhere that 2x Xeon 2687's can get these kind of numbers?

You missunderstood. The dual Xeon 2687s can only compete with this in terms of PPD/Watt. The Xeons will need less wattage but produce like 290.000 PPD on average. I forgot what the Xeons consume in F@H...

Crazy, that's doubled our number 1 folder's PPD.

Well now I am the teams #1 folder ;)

Hi, i've never really known what folding was, but i've read it can help people?

How can a PC running help someone, i don't get it?

I think i have read it somewhere before, about helping with deceases and such.

i'm not an expert, but as far as i know you simulate protein folding on your pc which helps cancer research

Here you can find some guides how to set it up. F@H is basically donating computing-performance to hopefully find cures for various diseases.

But this is way off topic here, so please start a new one ;)

Woooot!

The PPD still go up. The folding farm just broke the 600k PPD for the very first time!

614,090 PPD average over 7 days. How sick is that!!!

That is nearly as much as the next top 5 folders of the team put together!

The PPD seem to remain over the 600,000 PPD mark on average. I wonder if this will continue. It is just unreal what this one computer is doing right now :o

I thought I would address that question again as I can provide more detailed information now. I talked to a friend of mine who's using two 2687W CPUs for folding exclusively.

There are new P8104 WUs (to keep it as up to date as possible) out now, which we will compare here:

My system pulls 700W from the wall folding these, and can do about 690k PPD on average if those were the only WU being folded. The two 2687W CPUs can now produces their most ideal score: 430k PPD on average. So my system is basically producing 60% more PPD on average.

But this is a relative number, because the faster a WU gets finished the more bonus points you get. In order to really compare the speed of two systems such as these, you have to compare the time per frame (TPF) values of both systems. These indicate how long it takes for each percentage point of this particular WU to get finished.

The two 2687W CPUs run with 8 minutes and 55 seconds just about 30% slower than my quad 6180 SE setup. My system needs for the same process 6 minutes 25 seconds. So real computing power difference is merely 30%.

However the Intels pull "only" 470W from the socket compared to my 700W. My system pulls nearly 50% more from the wall for 30% more speed, and a 60% increase in PPD.

In the end if you compare these two systems it is really hard to know which is better in terms of PPD/watt. Depending on the WU these numbers can shift one or the other way. But hopefully this will explain why this is one of the best CPU-based Folidng@Home systems you could buy for somewhat normal amounts of money. The two 2687W CPU-setup costs just a little less. So unless you go quad Intel and spend twice the amount of money I put into my rig (if not more), this is pretty much it.

And you can tell by the PPD the system has produced. Over a 28-day period it averaged about 575.000 PPD. A big number ;)

I had a few problems with the folding farm lately and I had to set everything up new again. By that I mean I had to format the disk too... It did take me quite a while unfortunately to notice the problem and to get rid of it, but with today's date the PPD should get back on track.

It's PPD has even fallen under the 430k PPD mark, which I'd get with folding only the bad P8101 WUs. I reckon the next week will surpass the 3 million mark for the week again.

Here a little update of the milestones the folding farm has achieved in the last month.

Soon the 25 million ought to be full, so the 10 million milestone would disappear from that list. I think it is interesting to see it's progress for each of the the million points milestones.

You guys are welcome to comment ;)

When I first saw the numbers being pumped out by this uber rig, I did loads of research - it sent me on a 2 day side track looking at parts etc.

Me Want.

It has been pretty good indeed. With the current WUs it did maintain pretty much the 575k PPD average mark consistently. Apart from the one week I had problems that is ^^
