If you hadn't guessed SD FX55 ROCKS

Guys,

Just thought I'd post my mini review (more of a report) of this CPU (using DFI SLI-DR MOBO 510-2 BIOS), I am very pleased with it.

I can run the San Diego FX55 at over 3.5Ghz (253x14) which is superpi 32m stable, 254x14 runs 32m superpi 99% of the way and then resets.

I usualy run at 268-270x13 for 3dbenchies as they like the extra bandwidth, my ram is holding me back (BH5 only goes as high as 268 100% memtest stable, after that it's a bit flakey).

Volts? I can run the LDT volts at 1.3v, chipset at 1.6v and the CPU volts at max overclock is set at 1.45x113%.

Temps are good too, fully overclocked BIOS reads -16degrees, not used speed fan yet but I can tell you thats 10degrees cooler than the Clawhammer - both in my GT of course.

It's a great CPU, I'd like to try out the dual memory controller on the chipset too but I need to get 4 sticks of ram to give it a go.

£550 is a bit steep for a CPU, but I just sold my clawhammer on ebay for £425 so the upgrade was £125, thats less than £0.50 per mhz of extra performance using less volts and less strain on my motherboard

You can see from the benchmarks I have posted that it does not fail to impress either, Scorchio has a similar set-up and is still fine tuning his set-up - expect to see some improved scores shortly.

The x2 is 5% quicker than the 4000+ clawhammer in single threaded applications (everything except video editing) and has the same 12x max multiplier.

My Clawhammer FX CPU went up to 3.25Ghz stable 250Mhz less then the new one.

For now I would stick with single core, unless video is your thing, then the x2 will be the KING.

I am concerned that the x2's use more power (and run hotter) than the clawhammer FX and I have to ask if the current set of motherboards can handle the extra stress when at max overclock (I remember putting a P4 extreme edition cpu in my lanparty and blowing up two of them before deciding they are not compatable) and if the max overclock will be limited by the extra heat produced.

By the time most programs and games are multithreaded (12months from now I guess) I would imagine that we will have a new generation of motherboards, revised cores (faster or lower power and heat), Longhorn and all the other things - No doubt x2 is the future, but for now it's in the 'nice to have' folder, FX55 or FX57 are the 'must haves' of extreme overclocking.

Thats just my 2 cents.

The decision as always, is yours (said in that blokes voice of 'Blind Date).

Heck mine identical to yours ie 3250mhz max also 268mhz mem bh5 max so 250mhz is fantastic gain ,now if we could find out wether these are the dressed down or pre release fx57 it would make descisions easier.;)

There is a rumour that they are identical to these early releases as FX55 will be discontinued when FX57 is released. These are just pre-production runs of FX57 and as such are badged FX55.

Hope this helps.

I am the complete opposite of disappointed with this purchase.

Cheers

Mav
