I have previously put a post on requesting help for my future PC Build I am torn between waiting for AMD Bulldozer or getting a i7 2600k I have been doing lots of research over the past few weeks I want the build mainly for 3D modelling using 3DS Max and some other work using Z Brush with the option to game I fancy Crysis and few other games...my budget was between £1000 - £1500 I have settled on a £1000 for know as tat is the most I can spend in one go.

This is the i7 build that I would buy all the prices are taken for Amazon.co.uk I could shop around if need to save a few £££.

NZXT Phantom - Full tower - extended ATX - black - USB/Audio/E-SATA - NZXT

£109.50

Noctua NH-D14 - Processor cooler - ( Socket 775, Socket 1156, Socket AM2, Socket AM2+, Socket 1366, Socket AM3 ) - aluminium with copper base - Noctua

£65.50

Corsair CMPSU-850HX Professional Series 850W Power Supply - Corsair

£123.99

Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Vengeance Memory Two Module Kit - Corsair

£58.98

Asus P8P67 PRO New B3 Rev Motherboard (P67 chipset ATX, Intel?s 1155 Socket, USB 3.0/Sata 6Gb/s, Bluetooth & Digi+VRM ) - Asus

£133.81

Intel Sandybridge i7-2600K Unlocked Core i7 Quad-Core Processor (3.40GHz, 8MB Cache, Socket 1155) - Intel

£238.30

Asus 1GB GeForce GTX 560TI DirectCUII PCI-E Graphics Card - Asus

£179.44

Total £906.53

I have a few questions

Are these parts a good choice??

Will the NH-D14 fit in the Phantom

Can I render quickly with the 560ti??

Any other things you feel will help feel free to post and swap out parts on my list if needed and add things I have missed.

Thanks.

Answers for the first two questions are, yes and yes, but, the normal Vengance will not fit under the D14 you will need to get the Vengance LP which don't have the massive heat spreaders.

hi - i also use max64 (almost every day), but i use mudbox for painting and doing hi-res normals.

the i7 2600K will fly through the rendering scene (even with vray, etc)

max does not utulise the GPU very much when rendering, but will use the GPU better to display smooth+textured viewports at a higher framerate.

but you will be taking the advantage of 12 threads when rendering hi-res scenes

ditto to what SieB said

and maybe get mushkin ram

Iv changed my mind from Corsair to Mushkin

12 threads the 2600k only has 8 and i will look in Mushkin.

Dug do you use Max for fun or work i'm still learning it am setting myself a project when i have done my build.

Keep the case-£109

Keep the cooler-£65

Change the PSU to an AX850W, its far better, maybe £20 more (I got mine from Dabs.com), its actually silent when you're just doing small stuff

Change the RAM, Mushkin Blackline 8GB 1600MHz 9-9-9-24-1.35V, I think its £75 or so, but it fits, and you can get the frequency higher if you want.

Keep the mobo-£133

Keep the CPU-£238

Keep the GPU-OR upgrade to a 570, up to you, but then the 560Ti overclocks like a pro

Have you considered getting an SSD? A 64GB one will do, but a 128GB is amazing, adds about £150-180 though

For an extra £14 you could get the P8Z68-V PRO and take advantage of the onboard GPU on the 2600K (Lucid Logix Virtu), as well as Smart Response Technology if you ever wanted to use it in the future? I think what most people are saying, is if you are building an Intel system "now", upgrade to the Z68 chipset as its the latest technology out.

Tbf, I have the same mobo, but never found a situation where I need to use LucidLogix Virtu, in fact now the iGPU is disabled

Might help in the future though

Yeah I forgot to include the SSD in the specs but I was thinking of a 128GB for overall speed.

I read something before on another website about DRM and the i7 2600k that it will shut down the processor if you use a torrent client which I do is this true or just rumours??

No its not true, there is some security thing (I know what you're talking about vaguely), but it only affects some streaming from Intel-partnered companies/sites.

If you imagine, there would have to be some file to disable the CPU, the processor isn't going to actively go around checking for illegal torrents.

Dug do you use Max for fun or work i'm still learning it am setting myself a project when i have done my build.

i use it for work

i am the sole employee of my own indie game studio "NCC" (Nextgen Consoles Creations). i mainly write games for the PC, playstation(s) and xbox(s).

i code (in C++/assembler)

i model/texture (max/mudbox)

i world/level/scene || design/build (max/softimage)

i have a sony pro-dev license and have used XNA. i have developed my own WYSIWYG DX11 game engine sandbox over about 15years

i am also an autodesk beta tester

do you need any help?

Not at the moment I started a Video Game Design course last year consisting of 3d design, web design and programming

I really enjoy 3d modelling the module was quite rushed we only covered the basics to get the assignment finished but I am wanting to set myself a task as I have a year break before we return to the module ( I am doing the course part time and the module's are split ) I am doing Java Programming and Web Design when I return in September

I am quite good at doing shapes I was wanting to do a full character model from scratch including all textures and doing all the UV Unwrapping and everything myself and maybe doing a full scene to try and learn above the basic so I have a bit more knowledge when I cover the module again

Do you have any ideas or any websites I can use to improve myself I've never used Mudbox as it won't open on my current system but ZBrush will do andI have used that for about 2 hours as I am still getting used to the interface I would like to try to use Mudbox as some point

I've got some ideas on models and designs I'd have to do some sketches to then try to recreate them on Max then add details on Mudbox.

Have you got any games that you have published and how do you get a Sony Pro Dev license??

i have been WRITING my own games and apps since the spectrum/c64 days (30yrs ago)

it cannot be learnt or taught FULLY in university, or any college, in the short amount of time you are given.

it is an art. skillsets must be moulded over time, and then RE-moulded to suit different architecturers as they emerge. i am still leaning

the sony pro-dev license costs in excess of 150K PER year per seat, and/or there is the royalties route (which is a con). SDK team entries are now taken down the MINIS path for the PS-modules. in which sony monitors you. like a trial run before they give you ALL their code. it is good for newcomers that are not limited companies.

their are hundreds of free sites offering free code snippets for game devving.

i have £1000s of hefty books and papers.

i am/was currently involved with firefly studios (germany), as a freelance coder/3D artist, on a beta for stronghold kingdoms.

http://www.strongholdkingdoms.com/

its core is written in XNA and managed-DX (via slimDX). i worked on the village animations.

Sound very interesting we apprantly get taught XNA and I got given a free beta of UDK a few weeks ago but my current system won't even load it

I know it can't fully be taught in College I find myself thinking about it non stop looking for ideas to model have always been interested in Games I think of game ideas a lot and find myself looking more and more into the games I play and looking at code on websites to try and get the hang off it

I just want to learn and digest as much as possibly about everything in the whole industry.

On the other topic I am possibly having to change my case due to size problems would all my stuff fit in a HAF 932 or a CM Storm case they are bit smaller or if I get the case I want could I put it on a CPU stand I found on Amazon to save space on my current pc stand??

Any ideas??
