Hi there i have a i7 950 on a rampage 3 gene with 6 gb of ridgeback redline notua cooler now i have had a good read of the forum posts on overlocking these and have a good idea of what i want from it and most of the settings i just want to know the best method of overlocking i am looking for to push it from the stock of 3.o6 to 4.0.

I have stress tested the rig at stock and i get a steady temp of 20 deg with a room temp of around 18 at idle while running prime it jumps to 54.5 just being cautious can some one confirm it is safe to start to oc with these temps?

now is it best to turn off everything except ht mode and leave all the volts stock and push up the multiplayers slowly and increase the volts when it wont boot? or go with some tryed and tested settings and work back

I know its a bit of a chip lottery but just for reference what are the dont's on the volts?

all overclocking advice can be found on the guide to overclocking i7 thread here.

Temps seem ok. i got a 920 and it fine at 4Ghz. All ive done (and this is what they guy advised me as im a newbie too)is have my multiplier at 20 and bclk at 200 (you might wanna start at maybe 190s, but your 950 is more powerful than my 920, but you can never be too careful). i think you turn off/disable "speed step" and give you Vcore a bit more juice, maybe 1.3ish volts (mine is 1.33v), your Ram frequency will change by defualt, reselect a frequency that is close to your RAMs rated fequency (mine is 1333, but i selected the closet frequency below it)

Hopefully im given the right advice, i know they guys here can run circles round me when it come to overclocking. if you have nay more quesries, post over in the i7 oclocking thread with what youve done so far and what you looking to achieve

I have an i7 950 running at just over 4Ghz with a BCLK of 191 and a multiplier of 21. Its on an asus p6x58d-e board with 6gb Corsair XMS3 1600mhz ram which is running just below its stock speed due to the overclock.

CPU voltage is just 1.26 volts which runs it stable (tested with prime) and its never crashed on me. Also got speedstep etc disabled so its not messing around. My cooler is a thermalright 120 extreme with push pull fans and the temps dont reach 60 in prime. I seem to have a good chip!

Just play sensibly it could take a while, mine did and I still havent finished with it. Never will be.

Well i have started my oc went on the side of caucion and pushed the speed up slowly i have foune mine will not run 4.0 on a smigin less than 1.33v.

My temps went up to 77.5 while runing prime but it was about 22 deg in my front room at the time some more work to do i think will keep ya posted

Well after some more fine tuning i got some much better temps 61 degrease very happy with that thanks to the ppl who replyed :-)
