i7 3820 + Sabertooth X79 + Corsair H100

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could give me some clarity on overclocking this CPU..

I've watched some videos and read some things, seems like everyone does something different. Some say leave the Turbo Boost on, some say turn it off. Some say don't mess with the bus frequency, some say 125 is the sweet spot..on and on.

I don't really plan on putting my system to the absolute limit by any means..I just know I have hardware capable of overclocking a good bit, and I want to do it safely.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Max out the turbo to whatever it can go to before playing with the bclk. Just be cautious when upping the bclk

The 3820 shouldn't really be able to overclock "a good bit," but there's probably room for it anyway.

james' tip is pretty solid.

Never looks good if you're using ASUS probe...

I've had chips go up to 95 degrees before ASUS probe told me it had even reached 70...

You need to use hardware monitor really, thats the best.

Have you been stress testing? The voltage looks a little high to me

And you need to be stress testing while to set the voltage? Reduce the vcore to 1.3, and go up in increments of 0.025 until it becomes stable. You need to test on prime95 for around 20 minutes on each voltage to give it time to blue screen or anything. Once it survives for 20 minutes, leave the program running for 10 hours to give it more time. If it doesnt blue screen, it'll be stable, if it does, increase the voltage again, and repeat the same procedure for another 12 hours and carry this on until you get a 12 hour stable OC.

for a 4.8 OC and H100 looks damn good.. you are running on the H100 the performance
(max fan speed) setting? 2-fans or four fans? what temp do you get with the balance and
quiet setting?
so far looks great. you'll prolly want to balance clock vs noise after you find your best clock.

Core speed is 4.35 mate if you look

Temps are perfectly fine there. You've got like another 25/30 degrees to play with, so you could try to push the OC more, or turn the pump and fans down to make it silent. Looking good though

Nice guys, glad to hear the #'s look okay.

Not really looking to push my system to the absolute limit so it will probably just stay where it's at.

I don't even notice the fan noise with headphones on...this thing is quiet!!!

Edit : Those #'s were with the Corsair h100 unit in the Balanced fan position. I am running the stock fans that came with the unit in a "Push" set up.

I'm not sure why you're playing with the bus frequency to get 4.3Ghz (Don't forget that changing the bus speed also changes the memory speed too)

The maximum multiplier for that CPU is x43 (I know - i have one)

I'd be inclined to switch back to 100MHz bus and use the multipler.

FYI, if you have a good cooler you can go to 4.6GHz+ subject to the silicon lottery!! Then you HAVE to up the bus speed!!!

IMHO the volts look high for 4.3GHz. I'm running 1.368V @ 4.6Ghz at the moment and i know that i can get the volts lower!

EDIT: Don't use my numbers - take the time and find your own!!!

As you can see from my sig, I've gota MSI X79A GD45 (8D).

It's the CPU that is locked to a maximum multiplier of x43. So it should be the same across other motherboards. The only way to get that chip over 4.3GHz is to change the bus speed.

I'm Running:

• 125MHz bus
• x37 Multipler

So that works out to be just over 4.6GHz


125MHz x 37 = 4,625MHz


Like i said in my previous post - changing the bus changes your memory speed too!!!


To ensure that it's not the memory that prevents booting - back off the memory speed so that it runs within its spec.


For example - if your memory is rated @ 1600MHz and you try to run it at that speed with the bus @ 125MHz it ends up running @ 2000MHz and will most probably prevent boot!!


1600 MHz x 1.25 = 2000 MHz


I'd try running the memory @ 1066 MHz to start with:


1066 MHz x 1.25 = 1332.5 MHz (Within spec)
1333 MHz x 1.25 = 1666.25 mHz (Over spec)

Settings on Rampage Formula: 1,4Vcore, 125BCLK,2000Mhz RAM. 65mx. Core Temp on BF4 Gaming (yes not Prime)

As said before: If you want to get more then 4,3 with the Multi then be carefull what you doin! Reeding is a good Rule for effektive Overclocking. Dont set your Stuff on other one´s Settings ... Every Chip has its own Sweetspot between Stable Temps and to much for 24/7.
