i7 3820 or i7 2700

hey guys. my sr-2 once again decided to die so i tossed it in the dump and won't bother rma the damn piece a shit cause i'm sick of it.

now since all my rig is useful for is playin battlefield 3, skyrim and starcraft 2, i was ondering should i get the 3820 or 2700 because i got both in the shop. gtx 580 handles graphics and corsair h100 handles cooling and corsair vengence 24gb handles memory and corsair ax850 handles power. so which cpu and board is a msi x79-g45. yuck!

When overclocked there is almost no difference between a 2600k and 3820 cpu performance wise. The chips are also almost identical in price at the moment ~£210.

If you are running 1 gpu then the x79 platform has no advantage over the z68:

1. Quad channel is not an advantage to gamers who don't use more than 8gb of RAM.

2. Extra pci-e x 16 lanes you won't have any use for with a single gpu.

3. PCI-e 3.0 isn't a reason currently to buy a motherboard since it has carries more bandwidth than cards can use. If you are planing to sli/xf the latest gen cards then you need pcie3.

4. Both have a couple of SATA 3.0 points.

5. Neither come natively with USB 3.0 support but both have a ton of USB 2.0.

Z77 beats the above because it bridges the gaps in the z68 vs x79 issue above by providing:

1. A single x 16 pci-e 3.0 lane which suits your wants but isn't necessary for your gen of card.

2. Native USB 3.0 support if you use that.

3. Potential other nice bonuses such as Lucid MVP.

i7 vs i5. For gaming you don't need an i7. A 2500k will easily power a single 580.

I would suggest you get a z68/z77 mobo and stick either 2500k or 3570k in it.

If the 3570k costs over 15% more than a 2500k at the time you want to buy then I would seriously suggest you just get the 2500k. IB is not going to be worth more than that.

2011 socket is a waste of money for gamers unless you use 3+ latest gen gpus.

From how i read that you already have a x79 board? if so then the 3820 is the only choice of the 2.

If you DONT have the board and you only realy game on the system just grab a mid range x68/z68 board and a 2500k, if you do other stuff like converting/3d stuff from time to time then a 2600k will help a little with that.

Also why not RMA your sr2 then sell it on when you get it back to off set the cost of the change over? surely its better to get some money out of it than to throw it away.

Hell you could allways just mount it in a Box type photo frame from ikea and mount it on the wall in rather than chucking it if you have a wierd sense of decoration like some people on here

if all you are using it for is gaming, get a 2500k on a z77 board, or wait a few more days for IB CPUs to be released.

if you do other stuff what needs lots of memory, the 3820 can fill both shoes, but it's platform cost more.

@ I Hunta x its been RMA'd twice before no more. Also I run a store which all we do is retail computer parts. We occasionally build a system but we don't bother check for what it suits best thats why we join OC3D.

i have already sold my 1366 Xeons and I have a few Sandy Bridge boards in stock. But since I posted this I was taking a look at my BFs 1090T rig. Since he's going LGA2011 for work purposes and at the shop we have 3 rigs with 990X for rendering videos and photos for those who wish to use em, I may just use his rig when he jumps ship. The 1090T with a GTX 580 may make a gread gaming rig. Dont you guys think so?

someone explain what went wrong there. does intel have the same issue as amd and need a windows update to make the cpu actually usable? or has both side solved that issue.

ok, after searching the forum, this topic is close to what i want to chat about.

currently on P67 i7-2700k 4.6 @ 1.31vcore on d14 air-cooling. the thread count

is awesome and really want to jump into 2011 and 3930k for video rendering,

but the funds cant support 3930k, but the 3820 is thrifty for my budget. not

gunna wait on haswell, and i hadn't tried a Z68 board for the Virtu rendering.

stay on the SB and up to Z77/Z68 board w/2700k @ 4.6 or

get into the SB-E and start with 3820 w/4.6 OC

cooling isnt an issue as i can stay on nh-d14 air or custom water loop.

Tom, if you would comment, because you go through this daily and may be

able to guide me into the right direction.

all with experience in Z77/Z68 in video rendering please respond. i do

not game, if i do, i can use the 2550k machine.

2600k/3770k/3820k perform virtually identically.

2011 socket is better if you plan on getting a 3930k at any point.

If you need more than 32gb RAM.

If you need more than 2 GPUs.

That's it basically imo.
