i5 2500k + H100 (rebuild and extreme overclocking)

Recon-UK

Banned
Hi all, it is time for me to get dirty with overclocking again, winter is here :)

I will rebuild my system first, re-apply some EVGA frostbite to both GPU and CPU.

Clean out the dust.. Re-arrange some internal stuff, also prepare it for maximum airflow.

Go for some extreme clocks with room ambient enough to freeze the sun :D

Wish me luck.

Goal for CPU (5.0GHZ+)

Goal for GTX 480 (950mhz+)

Specs:

i5 2500k

Corsair H100 + 4 fans (will decide what to use)

EVGA Z68 SLi board

EVGA GTX 480 SSC + Gelid icy vision, (will be taking off the standard fans, and applying 120mm fans)

Silverstone ST1000-G 80 Plus Gold.

"extreme overclocking" with an H100?
well, can't be that "extreme" then
good luck though

Well this all depends on what you class as extreme, air cooling is hard to work with whilst gaining huge clocks, and the H100 can be manipulated ;)

Recon,

System set up looks great..I have never used a EVGA board, but have seen alot of them in action.

You should do fine with the corsair h100, My son has the h80i and he is running his 2700k @ 5 hgz and while gaming he is low to mid 60's.

I have a profile that I run @ 5 ghz with but the temps are just a little too high for my liking, with this air cooler...when gaming @ 5 ghz my temps will reach 72 to 74.

Let us know how it goes,

Ron

Thanks Ron for the support ;)

Ok, i have sucessfully modded my GTX 480 with 2 120mm xigmatek fans, and reattached the cooler with clean paste.

I decided to stay with 2 fans on the H100, i have misplaced the extra 4 screws to mount another 2 fans, not a massive deal however.

I will post up some images in a few moments.

Ok, i have a small problem.....

The 480 crashed at clocks previously stable...

880 core/ 2000 mem/ 1138mv

I tested it in AVP, hit 70c and the drivers crashed...

I am wondering if the VRM's are getting enough air?

That board looks Bad Ass:
Is that 70 the gpu temp or vrm temp ? I would not think that it would crash at that temp for either.
This cooler is what you had on prior/just new fans correct?

How is that h100 doing?

Ron

The GPU hit 70, it looked like the xigmatek were not pumping out enough air, i then went ahead and swapped them for a pair of Corsair H100 fans :D

But that did not turn out so well....

No worries though, i will just be overclocking my CPU until i can grab a few quid to replace the heatsinks on my 480, to really push it hard.

CPU is currently at 4.8ghz, 1.4V

Ok, i ran OCCT for 16 seconds, 2 cores were above 80c.....

That is not cool....

Ok, retesting at 1.32V with PWM's at 750KHZ, really doubt 4.8ghz at 1.32v will be stable though.

Christ.... still hitting around 80c after only a few seconds...

I am going to add in some higher RPM fans to my H100 i think, 1500RPM seems to not be able to move the heat quick enough.

If all fails, i still have a Noctua NH-U9B-SE2

My H100 seems to really under perform :(

I have an even better idea, how about use the H100 on my GTX 480, then use the Noctua for my CPU???

Should'nt be too hard for me to do,

I have not used OCCT in a few years...I use prime but those temps look high as hell for 15 seconds..

We removed the pre applied tim on the corsair h80i and applied Arctic MX2 tim

I doubt that makes that much difference in temps..

Dwood makes H100 brackets? I thought it was up to the H70?

Maybe you should consider getting some Indigo Xtreme or some PK-1. I don't see the best reviews for Frostbite.

Hopefully you find your mounting kit and fix your 480 problem. Good luck!

Ok, this is really, really strange................

4.5ghz @1.29V 67c max temp under OCCT, i have not changed anything....

If i bump Vcore higher, it rockets faster than micky mouse on crack.

God, i hate the H100, really shitty performance here :(

Room temp: 19c
