i3 2100 or Phenom II X4 955

Building my mate a gaming PC of around £450 and I need some advice on what CPU to get him.

My thoughts are:

1. Get the X4 955 which is a pretty decent processor for gaming at £83 and I think better than the i3 2100?

2. Get him the i3 2100 which may not be as good as the X4 955 (I think) but it gives him room to upgrade to a 2500k in the future.

I really need some advice because I want him to get the best deal for his money. Link to the part list for the build here.

Cheers

I would have to say at least at the moment get the i3 and like you said he could upgrade to a 2500k or 2600k in the future if he wanted to. Or you could get the AMD proc and an new 990fx AM3+ mother board that way he could upgrade to bulldozer in the future.

if ur looking for ultimate low budget gaming have I got a deal for you

Haha I don't think it will be that cheap after importing it to England

I think he should go with the i3 so that he can upgrade later, I'll have a chat with him

That will remain unanswered until it comes out. Many were expecting Llano to go into that socket but it doesn't, another new socket from AMD.

Asus announced that their AM3+ 990fx boards will support the new bulldozer chips. That's the main reason why I got the Sabertooth, so maybe not all boards will support it but all of the AM3+ 990fx boards from asus will.

Spoke to my mate and he agrees that going for the 1155 would be more future proof so I'm going to get him this chip and mobo

If you go for a H61 board - you won't be able to overclock in the future if he upgrades to a 2500K. Only the P67 or Z68 boards will allow you to OC the "K" series chips.

He definitely won't be overclocking and I only overclock my own rigs so it should be fine

Thanks for the info though

You could always take the chance and see how BD turns out? Thats what i did. I can ALMOST assure you that the BD will be faster than a 2600k. but idk about ivy bridge, again take the leep i say. I did. But then again i also have an intel rig with a 2600k too
