I Went Wireless !!!

Hey All

I am moving into the loft soon so I needed to get a wireless router as currently I have wires running under the carpet to my downloading rig in the spare room.

Obviously not that I will be going in the loft wires were just not an option so I got hold of a Netgear DG834G real cheap and its working flawlessly wired into my PC but I have bought a Netgear WG111 wireless usb adaptor for my downloading rig. Not to bothered about pings but I just wondered how reliable I should expect the connection from my wireless router in the loft down to a spare bedroom would be. I chose a Netgear one as I have been warned to stay clear of no name dongles so I am hoping it will be ok.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks, Sam

Personally I've found wireless to always be crap, you really dont think you can run some wires?

Trust Nol to think positive :nono:

No I cant run wires and since I have bought a WIRELESS router why would I want to

Hehe I was stuck on wireless for about 2 years... Imagine 2 years with CSS on a 300+ ping (this was with same cable 6mb up/dl I have today)

Wow something was wrong with ur gh3ytastic wireless setup then. I don't notice the slightest difference in ping when running wired vs. wireless here in my flat.

Same here. My wireless signal strength is fabulous.

Wireless sucks. Period. Now way would set my PC up on wireless ever. My parents are on wireless and they just disconnect for no reason - I've looked and I have no idea why.

Wires ftw tbh

I have wireless here (Super G), but it's only for my PDA at home. The signal strength I get on my PDA anywhere in the house is absolutely brilliant...can't fault it. But I still play games online wired :)

Yeh, I use that, it works very well, that said originally I had a Netgear WGT634U as the main ap, and it used to overheat and crash all the time. I'm now using a SMC access point as the main ap, and it's solid as a rock, so I guess it depends who you buy from.

You won't be saying that when N comes out :p.

Pffft -

Wireless: faff around installing drivers, then faff around with WEP keys/wireless utilities, windows networking rubbish...it still no workee and you cry

Wired: Get a wire, plug it in

As I said, my main rig will still be wired its just a downloading rig that will be on wireless so am not bothered about pings.

Wierd stories of wifi just randomly disconnecting on people?? I've NEVER had that happen to me once... That's just strange.

Well I am getting my wireless netgear dongle tomorrow so will let you know how it goes and I am on UKFSN on Friday to :D

I know what your saying.

Meh first wireless experience was an absolute nightmare. Drivers - messing about.. but err today I can slap a pci wireless card in something and be up and running just by letting windo$e do most of the work. (manuf driver-utils are often too messy, but when they work they work well)

Still don`t understand why a wireless card doesn`t (or wasn`t made to) work exactly like a wired nic. Ad-hoc pc2pc connections are just pants.

1 tip for you tho - if you have an open pc anywhere near your router, or anywhere in line between the router and the wireless card/laptop, your performance will drop to anything from crap or an on/off connection. This is due to the lcr circuits in your pc motherboard acting like a radio. (any circuit containing a laminated coil, a capacitor and a resistor is ~technically~ a radio) All your pc(s) need to be suitably cased (BY LAW in most countries) to prevent radio emissions, the law covers all electrical items. Some really cheap cases aren`t made of the right gear, purely plastic sides or substandard alumn. Alot of quality ones will feel strange to the touch on the inside, kinda rough - this can be a protect spray (which you used to be able to buy from places such as Maplins or CircuitCity)

Another interferer can be portable electrical devices that aren`t similarly shielded, home phones are a big culprit by nature they`re delibrately emitting signals - but these can often be bypassed by selecting different channels to operate on.

As I said tho, these days I can get a wireless network setup really easily and nicely, they don`t feel as good as wired ones tho for my liking, wouldn`t attempt to settle for playing games on one - too many drops etc. I`d personally drop a wire down from the eves in the roofing of the attic (all houses have them for air circulation) and run the wire into the house whereever the main cable goes into the house to connect to the modem/router. (clip the wire to the wall via some of those plasticy clip things with nails - I don`t know the freakin technical name for em)
