i-RAM2 is coming, and its looking much more promising!

Sources are reporting that Gigabytes i-RAM2 system will be launching sometime near february '06. i-RAM2 now features the use of DDR2 RAM, a SATA2 interface (opposed to PCI), 8 slots allowing for 16gb's of memory, and extended battery life due to the lower voltages used by DDR2 RAM.

All in all this looks like it might actually be a winner! It no longer hogs a PCI slot, it runs ram capable of utilizing the SATA2 bandwidth, and the battery backup lasts longer in case of an emergency power failure. Not to mention the increased capacity up to 16gb's! This makes it nearly the perfect candidate for running your OS and any benchmarking programs as there's no seek time and can utilize the entire width of the SATA2 bus.

I'm going to seriously consider this when it comes out... The first version didn't appeal to me for a quite a few reasons. Most of which have been taken care of with this second release. Hopefully we'll be able to get a sneak peak in the near future!

You can find more info over at VR-Zone.

That's all for now folks.

I imagine it won't cost too terribly much more than the current i-RAM which is $60. I'd say it'll probably cost somewhere between $100-$125 since it has a few more parts and it's own enclosure.

Monitoring the developements

Fragtek you seem to be a source of ultimate knowledge and advice. :worship: I will be monitoring your posts as you have already provided some good advice for me and also perhaps building my new system on some of your specs. Cheers mate.

Yep we'll tweak and pimp your rig till you slay those benchies :D

Cheers to you as well Kempez

Seems you two guys Fragtek and Kempez own this place as you are both giving plenty of advice all the time, and there are a number of posts which interest me .

I will let you know what I am going after once I dig out the New Year sales prices and place my order.

I have to be a bit sneaky as my missus thinks I am buying a dvd recorder to go under the TV with the money she gave me, so I have to try and source a cheap one of those at the same time.

Life is one big test which we have to complete and a little cheating never hurt anyone ( if they did not get caught)

Cheers again guys
