I needed an amp

Hi guys. I've been looking online for a cheap amp to power a pair of mini HI-Fi speakers i have connected to my rig. Perviously i was using a crappy amp circuit out of some of those portable speakers, needless to say it was shit! After searching online, not only were small amps not that cheap, they sucked balls in terms of specs (assuming the Chinese crap even performs as they say it will). So the other day i had a brain wave and thought, why not use one of the old car CD players i already have just lying around? So i did just that.

Here's what i did...

First i got a piece of steel (an old side panel actually), drew out my design and then cut it out.

I folded the steel into the desired shape and then made some cuts so it would sit flush under my desk.

Next i set about making the I/O. Check out my crap glueing skillz. Good job it wont be seen!

I then modified the player of choice so that the "Aux" was sent out the back of the unit.

With that done i installed the player in my enclosure and wired it all up.

I then went in search of something i kinda overlooked, i meaty enough PSU to power the thing. My maths suck absolute balls, but i worked out that at full whack the player will draw about 4.5A. luckily i managed to find an old 12V power supply rated at 4.2A, which is plenty because distortion will occur before it reaches it's peak anyways. I'll more than get away with this.

With all of that sorted i screwed it to the underside of my desk and tried it out. Not only do i think it looks smart, but i'm pleased with the sound. At the end of the day i only use this setup for watching YouTube videos etc. When i play my music i play it though my proper setup. The only thing letting this little setup down are the shitty mini HI-Fi speakers I'm stuck with at the moment. I have a nice pair of monitors lying around doing nothing but they're far to big for my desk (GAY!). I think I'll get myself down the car boot in search of a branded pair of mini Hi-Fi speakers and call the setup done.

Anyways, here it is installed...

Thanks for looking and hope this inspires others to tinker.

Peace!

I have no idea how those things work, but I would've never thought you could use a car radio for this

Anyway, nice mod :)
